Spencer Fleury: Things Are Very Likely to Get a Lot Worse Very Quickly

August 30th, 2021

Photo courtesy of the author I’ve recently had the opportunity to work with debut author Spencer Fleury on a sort of re-release of his sort of crime novel, How I’m Spending My Afterlife. I write sort of, because Spencer will tell you that How I’m Spending My Afterlife is more than a crime novel, it’s also a character study and dark comedy. Further, the book was previously self-published, but now has found a home with Woodhall Press.

An interview with NB Turner and Kirstyn Petras of Dark Waters Podcast

August 25th, 2021

Photo via the hosts N.B Turner and Kirstyn Petras are the hosts of Dark Waters, a literary podcast exploring dark, dreary, twisted fiction. As one of the more engaging platforms of its ilk, it brims with genuine personality and exploration — not only covering author's new releases, but also going back to cover more vintage classics (like they did recently with Don DeLillo's Cosmopolis).

Mark Allen Gunnells on Crafting Suspense & Diversity in Reading

August 23rd, 2021

While some readers seek out steamy romance stories or murder mystery novels, some of us are constantly on the hunt for a tale steeped in heart-palpitating suspense, one that is positively gorged in dread. If you are one of those readers, look no further. Mark Allen Gunnells is a modern master of such horror, and his newest novel, Before He Wakes, had me gripping the edge of my seat the entire time. This novel, as well as his other release this past year, 2B, are amongst my absolute favorite reads of 2021 so far.

Interview: "Fuck those other Chuck Wendigs"

August 4th, 2021

Author photo courtesy of Hachette Book Group He's a bestselling author. He's a guy on Twitter. He lives under your bed. Chuck Wendig is many things, and the fact that he has a great sense of humor makes it easy to joke about those things. But besides being a superb storyteller with an outstanding new novel, Wendig is one of the good ones; a man who blurbs a ton of books, shares his knowledge about publishing with upcoming writers, and keeps readers happy.

An interview with Stuart Buck, Editor of The Bear Creek Gazette

July 19th, 2021

For many, Bear Creek will feel eerily familiar — the way any Main Street, USA will seem quaint at first glance. However, the longer you stay, the more hidden dread you observe under the town's chipped paint. The charm wears away quick — you're hungry and depressed, so you ask a local for directions to the Brown Bear Hot Dog Stand and Suicide Prevention Center; instead, he takes you to the new Fuckable Wax Museum.

S.A. Cosby: "Writers get stagnant the moment they don't try to push themselves."

July 6th, 2021

On the still-smoking heels of his breakout novel, Blacktop Wasteland (Flatiron Books, 2020), current Southern Gothic-Noir potentate S.A. Cosby delivers the highly anticipated follow-up, Razorblade Tears, today on July 6th 2021. An even more challenging story than its feral hot-rod predecessor, Razorblade Tears follows Ike and Buddy Lee, the conflicted tag-team of grieving fathers who cover a blazing swathe of Red Hill, VA to avenge the deaths of their two gay sons.

The Guns Going Bang Is Sick: The Experimental Hyper-Violence of MIKA

June 24th, 2021

Anyone can write violence for violence's sake, but MIKA crams it into the compressed prism of our desensitized dystopia — under this applied pressure it bursts into nightmarish psychedelia that reaches inexplicable sensory-receptors we didn't know we had. Her debut collection NO TIGER (Apocalypse Party), is a poetry/prose/collage written in an urgent, teeth-gnashing language — her exploding style of glitch-panic oblivion that, on first glance, seems a grim vision of the future until you remember it's happening somewhere out there right fucking now.

Shane Hawk: A Strong New Indigenous Voice in Horror

June 10th, 2021

Photo courtesy of the author With 2021 comes a ton of great work to look forward to in the horror genre, but after reading Shane Hawk's debut anthology, Anoka, I am most excited to see his name in collaboration with publisher's like Death's Head Press and Howl Society. Anoka is a collection of shocking and disturbing short stories crafted with the perfect blend of folklore and supernatural horror. I'm going to be keeping my eye on Hawk as he delivers fresh literary frights to unsuspecting readers.

The Moment All Hope Is Lost: A Conversation with Horror Writer Amanda Headlee

May 27th, 2021

Photo courtesy of the author I’ve had the great pleasure to work with horror writer Amanda Headlee on the release of her very creepy debut novel, Till We Become Monsters. Amanda herself is very not creepy (even if by her own admission, she’s kind of weird). Subsequently, one of my fascinations with Amanda is not only why she loves horror, but how she manages to write about it so effectively while being both incredibly normal and efficient given the wide array of day-to-day things she’s engaged in.
