It's that time of year again, when a panel of twenty judges representing the National Book Foundation whittle down a wealth of candidates to just five per category, creating the National Book Award (NBA) shortlist. This year, the fiction category is particularly strong, with George Saunders's highly lauded Tenth of December and Thomas Pynchon's latest, Bleeding Edge, both making the cut (read our 10 Questions with Saunders here).

Here's the full list of finalists, with links to eBook samples of every title minus the poetry contenders, courtesy of GalleyCat. You can also download excerpts bundled by category from the NBA website, which offers a poetry sample.
