I kept a spreadsheet of the story, the submission date, the response date, if it was accepted or rejected, and reason for rejection (if they sent back any note).  The point was to stop myself from accidently sending a story to the same place twice, but it became a long list.  I think Glimmertrain got sent everything I wrote, and they rejected every single piece :).

My latest rejection was from Pear Noir for a short story that I've been sending out all year.  Fourteen submissions and no bites, although I did get some really great personal feedback from a couple magazines.

My first acceptance happened after two submissions (with a different story), but I was really lucky because I had a story that fit pretty much exactly what the magazine was looking for.  Sadly, I can't seem to find that luck again.

"Eden" in the first issue of L'Allure des Mots

I wrote both those stories in Mark's "Art of the Short Story" class, which is well-worth taking if he offers it again.

Also, Alex, I've gotta say you're a badass.

I think that picking your markets carefully is good way to avoid the huge pile of rejections. Whenever I have been trying to get a story out there I've focused on sites that tend to run similar styles of stories to mine.

The results have been double edged - Downside is that it takes me longer, especially as I don't usually simultaenously subit. Bit of a drag at times because I'm not especially fast at the writing and workshopping stages either. Upside is that I haven't had that many rejections though, most of the stuff I have sent out has found a home I'm more than happy with.

Still there are a few - NEON is a magazine in the UK that I like the look of, but they haven't been keen on my stuff. Blink Ink have never been bothered about my micro-fiction pieces. Took me a few goes to get a story at Dirty Noir and Shotgun Honey have passed on some stuff since the one hit I did get there.

I'm one for six with Word Riot (at least since I started using Duotrope: they may have rejected me before then). And two of those rejections were for some print anthology (rather than the website) that they were doing and I submitted to it around the beginning of the year (and can't remember the details about it). I assume it was a lot more difficult to get a story accepted into the anthology than the website. I probably get stuff accepted 1/3 of the time, but I rarely submit.

Bekanator's picture

I was rejected by Word Riot and PANK recently too.

And I have to say, I am also impressed that I even hear back from these magazines...

It's funny, all I have ever read about being a writer is being rejected constantly, so we I get rejected I feel like now I'm a "real" writer.

Someone told me a story about how Stephen King wrote in his basement and placed a nail above his typewriter. On this nail he stabbed all of his rejection letters. And one by one they kept piling up towards the head of that nail until he published "Carrie" in 1974.

Bradley Sands's picture
Bradley Sands from Boston is reading Greil Marcus's The History of Rock 'N' Roll in Ten Songs October 27, 2011 - 9:39am

I really want to read Carrie when I find the time because I think Stephen King's novels usually make great movies and television miniseries but I don't think they're good books because they're all a few hundred pages too long and filled with way too many details. And his editors seem to be too timid to suggest any cuts or changes, so they just fix his typos. But since Carrie was his first book, he probably he had a "real" editor back then so I'm interested in reading it (plus it's short, unlike the vast majority of his other books). I also really liked the movie (and Brian DePalma movies in general). Although seeing the movie before reading the book ruins my reading experience a little since I already know what's going to happen, but I hear the literary version of Carrie gets a little more "hardcore" than the character in the movie.

I used to read and enjoy his books in elementary school because while my friends were allowed to watch all these R-rated horror movies, my parents banned me from them but let me read anything I wanted, so Stephen King novels were my substitute. But when I got older, I started to hate his long-windedness and pretty much the only book that I've read by him that I think highly of is The Gunslinger.

So yeah, I have the tendency to get off-topic.

I'm in the process of polishing my first story for submission. I'm super nervous, but I'm excited to get that first rejection letter.

Unless I get accepted on the first try, which is unlikely and would doom my career forever with the lopsided fortune.

I love the Stephen King Nail anecdote. I've joked with my wife that I need hammer a nail into the wall above the computer in our bedroom. She does not approve of that idea :)

@ David

That is hilarious. I thought about putting a nail above my laptop too. Probably not as cool as above a typewriter though? And all rejection letters are by email now, so we would have to print them out.

And yes, embrace that first rejection letter with pride.

The way the ratio works, every rejection letter is one step closer to publication.

simon morris's picture
simon morris from Originally, Philadelphia, PA; presently Miami Beach, FL is reading This Body of Death, by Elizabeth George October 27, 2011 - 12:28pm

My string of acceptances of book-length projects ended at 3-3. They were all works of nonfiction and each sold to the first publisher to see them. Then I got it into my head that I could write fiction and got rejected by a couple of publishers before I decided that I needed to do more learning in the field before getting back into the fray. Thus, I am here.

I do not get upset at rejection. It is a necessary part of the publishing cycle. My focus though is always on the publishers with the best track records so that when I do get rejected, it is by the best I can find.

I always joked that getting published is like getting married. I would rather be rejected by a millionairess nymphomaniac, only child, whose father owns a chain of liquor stores in upscale neighborhoods and whose doctor gave him six weeks to live than by some two-bit heroin whore who can't even fill her bag of quarters each day.

For that reason, I will never consider self-publishing. That is like online sex. The only bang is the one you give yourself. I start with the best publishers who will take unagented material and work down. I have been lucky. I hit the top of the heap on my first two books mainly because I researched their dance cards and found a hole where my little corner of expertise fit.

My fiction focus is reality reimagined. I believe, for purposes of writing fiction, in the theory of parallel lives. If only one small change occurred at a critical moment, the following might have occurred. And that is where my stories begin...sometimes with desultory outcomes. It follows my philosophy of life: If you wish in one hand and piss in the other, watch which one will fill up fastest.

I've only been seriously submitting for a year now.  I take the rejections hard at times, but not personally.  It's never really rejection that upsets me; it's moreso looking at the other writers published in the magazines I'm striving to get into and seeing the extensive list of places they've been published.  There are times when I feel like I'll never get my foot in the door.  It's those "the glass is definately half-empty" moments that really suck.  But I know that with enough effort that I'll have myself a fucking list as well.

@Richard - I love the tally you've got going.  I wonder what everyone else's looks like.  Here's mine:

To anyone who's been published,  how many rejections did you get before you got your first acceptance?

I think I submitted a novel before I ever submitted a story and it was accepted by the first small press that I sent it to.

Although I think I may have entered one short story contest before that (which didn't have an entry fee because I think the vast majority of contests with fees--and most of them have fees--aren't worth the money). I didn't win or "place" in it. Although I vaguely remember some story contest that I won second place many years before it (when I was like 18 or 19) and it was for some random website that I can't remember anything about except that it wasn't related to literature. It probably no longer exists. I think the same story was published in my college's undergrad lit journal, which was my first publication. I didn't even submit the story. A few of the journal's editors were in a creative writing class with me, liked one of my stories, and asked if they could publish it because they needed to fill some space in the next issue. And I think the journal was distributed on-campus and didn't cost anything, so it wasn't like those prestigous dull lit journals MFA programs publish that you can buy at bookstores.

Before I submitted my novel, I "published" a lot of my writing in my friend's zine, so rejection wasn't a factor in that regard. He put out one issue a month for a while with a circulation of around 100 to 200 copies. And each issue was about 20 pages (or 10 pages with stuff on both sides).  And the pages had collage backgrounds with sections of text pasted over them and they were copied on a copy machine at Kinko's. My friend would use his student I.D. (even though he was no longer a student) to get a discount on the cost of the copies and he maybe spent like $100 for each issue.  We'd staple the pages together ourselves. And we'd leave the copies behind at coffee shops and record stores around the city and people could get them for free.

I'm rejected all the time, but often try to use the rejections as a chance to further improve the piece or try to see it from the angle of the editor(s) of the particular journal that I submitted it to. Rejections can be useful if a personalized response is given or they spur me on to dig deeper into the site that rejected me and become even more familiar with the site.

Recent rejections: Microhorror, Shotgun Honey, Word Riot, PANK

About 15 pending.

Americantypo's picture
Americantypo from Philadelphia is reading The Bone Clocks November 26, 2011 - 7:30pm

If I count everything I've ever submitted since I started writing, I'd guess at having been rejected more than a hundred times, with four acceptances thus far (those four, thankfully, having been picked up in the past year). Though if I only count the number of rejections since taking writing seriously, I'd clock it closer to fifty or so.

I've been featured at microhorror, snmhorrormag (twice), and will be in Kzine in a month or two. Nothing spectacular, but everyone's gotta start somewhere. Rejection only matters if you're the type of writer that will let rejection stop you from writing. But real writers don't really care if they get accepted and they can't be told that they can't write. They go on regardless. Hence why so many published writers will tell you that they've been rejected a thousand times. Other people? They usually give up and never become what they could have if they kept going.

Utah from Fort Worth, TX is reading Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry December 3, 2011 - 2:50pm

I got rejected by Boys' Life when I was 9.  A story (submitted handwritten, in pencil) about a, uh, genetically enhanced hybrid of a strawberry plant and...a palm tree?  I think it was a palm tree.  The plant grew all out of control and pulled down whole buildings from its sheer weight.  Genius stuff.  Could have changed the face of American literature.  But rejected by Boys' Life.  And now that magazine is out of business.  Coincidence?  I think not.

Thats quite a list Richard, how did you keep the motivation to keep sending them in??

MattF from Tokyo is reading Borges' Collected Fictions December 3, 2011 - 10:25pm

I'm currently submitting a story that's received 4 personalized rejections:

Made the "final editorial round" at Electric Literature.

Made the "final editorial round" at Hayden's Ferry.

"Unfortunately the Editors were split in their decision" at Black Warrior Review.

And was read with "more than casual interest" at Mid-American Review.

The same story has received form rejections from: Agni, Camera Obscura, Crazy Horse, The Indiana Review, The Boston Review, A Public Space, Story Quarterly, Tin House, Three Penny Review, Story Quarterly, Glimmer Train, and was "lost" by the editors at The Florida Review.

It's pending responses at 4 professional markets.  It was written over 2 years ago.  I'm of the habit of sending stories to 6 markets at a time.  I need to increase this substantially.
