Hello everyone! I’m new here and just wanted to post a little introduction. I’m a non-published writer who currently works for a car service serving the greater NYC area which means I drive mostly on Long Island. A few years ago I decided to get an online college degree, you would think that with my love of reading and writing I’d have taken some journalism major but instead I decided to major in accounting. So, I now have a BA in Accounting that I’ve done nothing with and student loans to pay off. What a brilliant idea that was! Live and learn, right?

I love to read and I’ve picked up quite a few free and 99¢ Amazon books along the way. I like to see what indie authors put out there because that’s how I see myself as a writer. Something I’ve learned is that there are some authors who just don’t care if their work is edited properly, if there is continuity in their stories, or if what they’ve written will be worth the time of the reader. I don’t want to be that kind of author. When I say ‘worth the time of the reader’ I don’t mean that I didn’t enjoy the way the author took the story or that I didn’t like the way they portrayed the character but more along the lines of ‘A fifth grader could have done a better job’. My goal is to make the story I am telling in whatever genre I’m telling it to be something that a reader can enjoy. I want people who read my work to say, “I can’t wait for the next one to come out.”

I’m here to pick up some tips and pointers, maybe join some classes, and hope that at some point I can get my work published.

Thank you for taking the time to read this! Sue

Curious why you're not an accountant? (For now.)

Anyway, hi. What kind of stuff do you write?

Welcome! Hope you find what you're looking for. Lots of people will recommend any class with Richard Thomas as a starting place, and I'll second that (before it's even first-ed).

@Thuggish I'm not an accountant because I was so burned out by the class load and work that I decided to take some time off to regroup. Unfortunately the longer I was away the more it seemed that I did not retain the information and now I'm at this point where I'm not sure how to get out there. In other words, I'm making excuses! I know what I need to do it's just a matter of doing it.

I write in multiple genres (basically the same that I read), all fiction.

  • Fantasy: along the lines of Tolkien or D&D.
  • Romance: contemporary, paranormal, erotica. I've done some research on historical romance but never got that story off the ground.
  • Mystery/Thriller, actually I haven't tried that in a long time but it's an interest.

 Anyway, thank you for responding!
