Moon, good story man.  If you win with that, I won't feel a bit bad.  That is a lie.  But still true.  Make sense?

This is a helluva matchup, Moon.  Good shit.

This post serves the secondary purpose of being a really subtle bump.

Okay, been considering these all day.

What was the prompt? I guess for starters I will see who handled the prompt the best.

On that note, that is going to be interesting in WAR. Are the voters going to be aware of the prompts so they can take into consideration how well the stories were created from them?

avery of the dead's picture
avery of the dead from Kentucky is reading Cipher Sisters March 7, 2012 - 7:11pm

This was the prompt:

SHE DWELT AMONG THE UNTRODDEN WAYS"
SHE dwelt among the untrodden ways
             Beside the springs of Dove,
A Maid whom there were none to praise
             And very few to love:
A violet by a mossy stone
             Half hidden from the eye!
--Fair as a star, when only one
             Is shining in the sky.
She lived unknown, and few could know
             When Lucy ceased to be;
But she is in her grave, and, oh,
             The difference to me!

As you should be Doll. That was a great prompt. Took me our of my comfort zone to produce a rough draft I'm pleased with. So, I say thank you.

Chester Pane's picture

In the end, that is not helping me decide. But I like it. Great idea for a prompt.

I think with this one there is a very personal element that Rian's story addresses that speaks to me. I am lucky not to be that protagonist. I suppose that is the difference here this time.

I wonder how many of the War bouts are going to be this difficult. I hope they all are, actually.

Thank you Chester. I appreciate your vote, but more than that, I appreciate what you saw in the personal element. Avery's prompt really made me step out of my comfort zone. It was a hard story to write, even though most of it isn't true. But, the feelings behind it are. I can say, without reservation, that I am that protagonist... or was, that protagonist.

Thanks again, bud.

I say thanks to Chester as well.  Rian's story is fucking awesome and heartfelt and I'm glad you went with what your gut told you.  This gives me a lot of confidence in how smoothly WAR is going to go.  And how fuckin exciting!  This is awesome.

That said, I still have several days to create a bunch of fake facebook accounts and vote for myself.  This is not, after all, a closed poll.   Muaahahahah!

Yes, this really was tough. Most of the time it is  a lot easier. This was a 3-pointer at the buzzer where the foot may or may not have tripped in a pothole or been called for goal tending due to the illegal use of magic.

The Last Good Kiss, by James Crumley.  The last really fine writer of hardboiled.

And frankly, I'm almost glad to have lost this round to you just so I could have the excuse to send that book to somebody who might appreciate it.
