This was about 10 years ago, and you could argue Akashic has grown into a mid-size press by now. I remember going to a party during Brooklyn Book Festival weekend and realizing you could write and publish books outside of corporate publishing. My reading habits became more diverse and I ended up starting CLASH Books with my wife. I've seen a lot of micro and small presses come and go.

It was one of the best book events I’ve ever experienced. All the writers brought real originality and talent to the stage, but there was this tall dude with a famous last name that just killed it. He really stood out with a unique literary style. It was an amazing reading, and that weekend this writer and got to talk about our love of writing.
