The Week In Discussion: 5/21/12

The Week In Discussion

Today we're starting a new feature at LitReactor called 'The Week In Discussion.' Each week we'll look at and highlight some of the most interesting and popular threads on our Discussion Boards. We don't talk about our forums enough on the front page, but they're an addictive place where you can find great conversations, a fervor for reading and writing, and networking opportunities all around. We have picture threads, video threads, even writing-challenge threads that have turned into full-blown contests.

Here are some of the popular threads happening now. If you haven't already, register a free account and get in on the action today!

Bekanator’s Victory Party - Speaking of writing contests, one of our largest, entitled WAR, just ended and a winner has been announced. That winner was member Bekanator. Our runner-up was J.Y. Hopkins, while WickedVoodoo and our very own Defendor of the People, Utah, were semifinal winners. Go wish them all a big congratulations for this awesome achievement.

THE GREAT BIG MONTH OF JUNE "WHAT ARE KIRK AND DENNIS PLANNING?" SPECULATION THREAD - On June 1st, we're planning a big event. So big that we're asking you all to block out your month if you want to participate in it. Until the announcement is made, get in on the buzz-building and discussion at this speculation thread.

MATT ATTACK's Hairdo - Sometimes people have a bad day.  And when they do, sometimes their friends tell them how awesome their hair is. This was actually splattered all over all the threads until someone gave it a thread of its own.

Multiple Submissions - Good, bad, indifferent? - This is a vital thread for all you writers and workshoppers reading this- an important conversation on simultaneous submissions vs. following the "rules."

Workshop Whoring Thread - This is a good thread to keep an eye on. Member Matt Attack has put together a thread which keeps up with stories in the workshop that haven't gotten proper attention by reviewers yet (fewer than three reviews). This is also a great place that others can go on and whore / announce their new workshop posts to try and bring them exposure and reviews.

That's your line-up for the week. These threads take on a life of their own and grow organically and quick. So if you haven't yet been indoctrinated into it all, go register a free account and dive in!

Big props to Joshua Moyes (Utah) for helping us keep an excited eye on all the Discussion Board activity this week.

Is this some cloak and dagger attempt to make me clean up my language?

I think this is a wonderful idea. Great stuff, Dennis.

Helps marry the various parts of the site. That can only be for the good of us all. Bring in some new faces to the forum too? Even better.

Forums can seem hard to get involved with when you are new to them. All the in-jokes, and everyone knowing each other etc. I remember joining up at the Cult and it taking a very long time before I felt welcome. Hopefully it isn't like that here! Certainly there still seems to be new people joining all the time.

This can only help though. Might encourage somebody that wasn't sure whether to join.

Yes, let this be the take away.  If you join in the forum, we might randomly compliment your hair.  We might not, but we might.

Man, the forums are a whole other world. I spend so much time here on the magazine, it's like going to a foreign country.
