Of Course It’s A Prada Short Story Contest, Dahling
Of all the writing contests that are out there, I don’t think I’ve seen one run by a fashion brand before — but I have now. Prada, the fashion company from Milan has announced a new contest with a prize of €5,000 (approximately $6,558) and distribution of your story as an eBook, with the theme for entries to be on the subject “the reality and its perception”.
PRADA has called a Contest aimed at the accomplishment of short stories of a minimum of 10 (ten) pages and a maximum of 20 pages on A4 sized sheets, each page to contain approximately 400 words, written in Bodoni –DTC dim. 11 style, focusing on the inquire of the reality and its perception, especially: Views of the world. Images, marks, idea. The Short Story may be proposed in any language chosen by the Contender without any restriction.
By my calculations, that’s about 8,000 words, max. You have until the 18th of June when you will be able to upload your entry to the contest website at 1.00 p.m., C.E.T. Each entry will be judged by PRADA and by Giangiacomo Feltrinelli Editore, "a prestigious and internationally known Italian publisher" from Milan.
I have to say that some of their restrictions are a bit of a buzz-kill:
Stories must not: be sexually explicit or suggestive… be profane or pornographic… promote alcohol, illegal drugs, tobacco, firearms/weapons (or the use of any of the foregoing), any activities that may appear unsafe or dangerous…
What, no booze, sex, swearing, drugs or guns? Does this mean they just want ‘nice’ stories about kittens? Or are they just worried about promoting something that has all of that in it. I mean, c’mon, don’t they use sex to sell their products all the time? Or is that just me? It doesn’t say you have to write in Italian…
