Choose Your Own Adventure Goes Digital With Specially Designed eBooks
It's time to strap on our nostalgia jetpacks and blast into the modernized past! GalleyCat reports that Choose Your Own Adventure novels are now available as eBooks in Apple's iBookstore and Amazon's Kindle store.
For those of you not in the know, the books prompt readers with two courses of action at major plot points, allowing them to basically write and star in the narrative simultaneously. For example, in my personal childhood favorite The Abominable Snowman, on page five you discover that your colleague Carlos is missing from the Everest base camp. You'd like to find him and make sure he's okay, but you also have a meeting with a Yeti expert who can make or break your expedition. So, if you decide to cancel the meeting and search for Carlos, turn to page seven; if you think Carlos is probably fine and decide to attend the meeting, turn to page eight. And so it goes.
Series founder R.A. Montgomery spoke about making the gameplay-inspired texts workable in a digital environment:
[We tried] to duplicate that sense of moving through a story. That comes in the paper format by jumping around. We finally settled on some icons that required swiping and that seemed to help emphasize moving around the story. We also added a map feature, which I find neat. You can hop anywhere in the book from the map, or return to the branch you are on.
Twenty titles are on sale now, including The Abominable Snowman, which was also the first Choose Your Own Adventure, published back in 1979 (the paper and ink version is linked below). Visit CYOA's website for sample images and a nice history of the series.
Now, who else read these as a kid? What was your personal favorite? Will you check out the digital versions?
