Catholic Church Nixes Porn Bookseller

We know.  We know.

German porn isn't exactly the kind of festive subject matter you were expecting considering the upcoming holiday, but it's a slow news day and Bieber hasn't gotten his paternity test results back yet.

So here's the dealio: Weltbild is a pretty big deal in German publishing. They are owned by the Catholic church, have a workforce of over 6,000 people, and rake in about $1.6 Billion annually. They do general publishing, book clubs, and all that jazz--things the square community would consider "normal."  They also put out hot and nasty pulp novels, with such popular titles as Boarding School for Sluts and The Lawyer's Whore (that a Grisham?). Needless to say, the Catholic church is all cheesed off about it.

Twenty-seven German bishops met up this week to press the twelve bishops who co-own Weltbild to cut ties.  Consider that a done deal.  In their defense, the publisher explained that they were simply meeting the demands of the market.  After all, publishing is a business.

Even Pope Benedict XVI is getting involved, telling Catholics they should be "energetically opposing the distribution of erotic and pornographic material."

Sounds like Weltbild is going to have some openings at the boardroom table.

They should have changed anything they found offensive to good, wholesome, family-friendly words (ala: new version of Huck Finn).

"He gripped his thick cross and salvation rained over her body.  Warm, sticky salvation that ran down her habit as he said 'you are a clean girl.  You like the salvation, don't you?  The way it tastes in your holy mouth.'"

But it's okay for them to touch their alter boys??? I love the Grisham snippet in there.
