Ever read a book--when you're a kid, say--and years later, despite fond memories of the story, you can't remember the original author or title?

Then check out What was that book?

It's a LiveJournal forum, where people post the details they can remember about a book, and users try to help them figure out the origin.

Here's one, from user mindtrall

Doubt this was ever a hard back or bestseller. My recollection is that I got it in the early to mid-70s. I recall that it had something to do with a priestly group of "extrapolators" who could manipulate all sorts of things with their minds.  In fact, the single outstanding aspect of the book was the frequent use of the word extrapolate and its derivatives. Not sure of the publisher, but it may have been Ace.

Anyone know it? Go over and let him know. Ever find yourself seeking a forgotten book? Tell us in the comments.

The book was scifi, and was about a girl who was in a small town that was preparing to go to war and take over other towns. She ran away to try to warn the other towns, but the army followed her and killed the towns. They eventually took over a big city, and enslaved everyone. I think they even split the genders at the town. I do remember there being a different humanoid species that they enslaved, but then went to war against them. the settlers set up a beacon to signal a space craft to pick them up before it was too late. Sidenote, i believe the settlers were part of a space expedition to colonize another planet.

Hello everyone,
I am looking for a book that is historical romance. I do not remember the names of any of the characters so I'm gonna call the main-girl X and call the main-guy Y.
X is a Lady's Maid or a Lady-In-Waiting in the royal palace. This was the one dream her mother had for her. X's mother herself wanted to be a Lady's Maid/Lady-In-Waiting too, but when she got pregnant shortly after her marriage, she had to quit her position, and she made it a mission that her daughter, X, will become one too. X didn't really care what she did as long as she made her mother happy.
So there was a masquerade ball/costume party at the palace and all the staff was invited, including X. I can't remember what costume she wore, but at the party, she met a guy, Y, and she slept with him. Neither of them knew who the other person was, and X left immediately after the sex because she was embarrassed that she had lost her virginity to a total stranger. But Y didn't want her to leave and he spent some time looking for her.
You see, Y was a spy for the Crown, and he was super rich, but X didn't know that. I'm not sure, but I think he was nobility. He was only in town on a mission, and to see his boss. I don't remember much about Y's boss, except he was a closet gay (in the Victorian era, people couldn't be openly gay), and he was in love with Y. The boss knew Y wasn't gay but he loved him anyway. Y also knew his boss was in love with him, but they never talked about it. When Y was about giving up his search for X, he found her again, and they had this adorable cute-meet. It was so funny.
Because, apparently, X was pregnant from the night of the masquerade ball, and Y had the gall to ask if she was sure the child was his. She was so mad.
Anyway, in the end, X didn't know what to do because being pregnant meant she couldn't fulfill her mother's dream. Y asked her to marry him since they were having child but she said no repeatedly. Y's job as a spy put the two of them in danger so they had some difficulties, but in the end, they overcame the evil and lived happily ever after. And X's mother accepted that just because she had a dream didn't mean her child had the same dream.
I wish I knew more about the book to increase my chances of someone knowing what I'm talking about. If anyone knows the name of this book, please help me. I read it when I was 14 and now that I'm about to be 20, I have no clue what the title of the book is, who wrote the book, or what it even looked like. Any type of clue is appreciated. Thanks.

So I don't remember much about this book but I read it when I was in primary school and it was for more advanced readers it was about these people who lived underground and looked through the trash for food and there was one person who went above ground and made friends or something and I remember one scene when it's saying they found a half finished box of chocolate because one person had thrown away all the ones with nuts in and I don't really t remember anything else though there was another book I read around the same time which was about these people who grew from these wooden eggs and were generally used for labour but this one couple took one in and raised him and he was made of wood and if anyone knows either of these books that be great thanks

I can't find this book I read two years ago but it goes something like this... in the beginning she was at school and liked this boy, but knew she was different somehow, her best friend was a chick, I don't remember why they were in the city but they was and came across others that had powers each one having a different power, they stayed with them for a little while but then had to go do something else, ended up in a cemetery I think where they got into a supernatural battle, there was a vampire like chick there that I think betrayed them, then they ended up with this like librarian chick who trained her cause only she could defeat this guy she kept having visions about, her bf dies but she brings him back and he is like her best friend I think like the wolfish thing but they can read each other's minds, they pair up with other ppl on the way for this big battle, the leader of this army is sketchy but proves to be true, they go into battle and at the end she meets the guy one on one and starts fighting him at the very end the librarian chick shows up to help her and they kill him but the librarian chick I think dies anyways thongs somewhat get restored ... I think one of the characters names might have been named Alex and also there is this kid in the book he's real sarcastic but in a funny way and at one point he almost dies.... If someone could help me find this book it would be amazing lol

I read this book when I was in 7th grade. I cannot remember the title or the author but I do remmeber how the book cover looks. It's of a guy and a hugging but you cannot see the girl's face shes hiding it and you could barley see the guy's face and the backgroud is completely black. The book was about two different people that hung out with two different crowds, the girl was popular and the guy not so popular but they loved each other, the girl had a boyfriend and she died in a car accident i believe and the girl will write about the romance with the secert guy and her little brother read everything about the non so popular guy. If any of you guys could help me find this book i will really apperiacte it, thank you.

I am looking for a book written as I remember by a female writer, a novel based on the story of a girl that lived with nuns (abandoned by her family) and then she goes out in the real world as governess in a rich house and she finds her mother. When she is out from the monastery where she never eaten meat she can’t stand the meat as she feels the pain of that animal. I just can’t remember the title and the author but somehow I think it did have the word “rose” in the title.

I red it during a very harsh treatment and since than I can't eat meat, the book has a strong imapct and I would like to read it again. Thanks,

I read this book in the 6th grade it was school assigned and it was 2012 all i remember from it is that it was based on a boarding school that the main character , who was a guy with brown hair was sent to for being a naughty student in the school he was suspended from they cut his tie as a sign that he was expelled. his dad got mad and sent him to that boarding school. he met along the way a girl who her parents are famous actors and a guy who stutters a lot. anyways we later find out that the principle is a vampire and their french teacher is a werewolf. Every night kids would sleepwalk and go missing then come back as weird as ever then when it was his time he discovered he was a witch and they all had matching rings. the main character also eventually found that his principle stores backs of blood in his fridge . when her first entered the principle asked him to write his name then the pen like quill stabbed him in the finger and he write his name in blood. The book cover had a hunted school and lightning. The cover itself looked creepy and of the horro version. Please help me!

There was this short book series I used to read all the time when I was a kid each book told about facts of certain monsters like one book would be about werewolves or another one be about mummies or vampires, the books were really short and I used to read them in my elementary school library all the time, and now after all these years I find myself going insane trying to remember the name of the book series not only for the nostalgia but my 7 year old cousin might enjoy them as well since she loves monsters if I can find the name of the book series or maybe the author I'll be happy.

I'm trying to find a book I read between 2013 and 2014. Probably published after 2000.
It was about an asylum and each chapter of the book the character who was being portrayed changed. Each chapter was fairly short and I believe there were around 4 or so characters it would switch between.
The one who was in the asylum (not as a patient) was a male and one of the other characters was a woman who was a diver and at one point in the book Dove below 65ft and almost popped her ears (or did) which had something to do with a dead body.
Thanks for reading, please tell me if you know what it is called.
