I enjoyed this. It feels like it could be expanded into a larger story.
I think this story needs to be expanded. After the protagonist realises there is something wrong, it hurtles along, but I got a sense of it being cut down to fit, with explantations, demonstrations and some sense of what is happening falling to keep the word count down.
That did not stop me enjoying the story, it has to be said
