I've been a member of Guru for a while and look for some freelance writing jobs to see what the market is paying and what people are offering. You know, research for my new career. Sometimes someone offers up something that I think the group maybe interested in. For those savy and really need to make some dough. I haven't done it yet, because I'm a giant chicken and don't think I'm up to snuff yet. That doesn't mean that I can't share these things with you guys so you may be able to take advantage of the offers.

If anyone else knows of jobs that are out there by all means post them in here so that we can try helping each other out. Let's start Networking.

Pulled off Guru.com on Feb 26th @ 2330 or 11:30 PM to you civilian types.

You asked for it. I get like 2-3 listings a day with people who are looking for writers to either edit or write short stories and columns for their websites. As they come in I will put them here. I just hope I'm not infringing on some copyright law or anything. -__-

I just joined and the first notification I got was for a website my friend runs. He told us he wasn't going to pay writers until things got going, but it offers money in the guru ad. Hmmmm. It's not something I would be writing about anyway, but now I am really glad I didn't spread the word about his website and send people to him to get fucked on pay.

The only thing I don't like is you have to send a proposal to the client. Is that like writing samples or what? There is no guarantee they will choose you. Some lady wants someone to help her write about her husband's suicide, I applied for that one.

Utah--yeah. He didn't offer me the job, it's so far outside of my lifestyle that it wouldn't even be possible for me to write about (Electronic Dance Music). I just saw that he was doing a call for writers on his facebook and saying the payment would be access to these events until he made enough money to pay people. The ad was for an EDM blog that paid relatively well, and just happened to have the exact same description. So, I'll chalk that up to him not wanting to pay his hangerson to write, but being willing to pay professionals. And I won't take any non-paid work from him ;)

Okay so I made an account. Thanks for posting this by the way.

So I'm going to invest in the fiction writing skills test (US version) and I was wondering if anybody has taken this yet or knows what to expect from it, such as what kind of questions it's going to ask?

Jose F. Diaz's picture
Jose F. Diaz from Boston is reading Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel February 27, 2012 - 8:16pm

I actually have no clue. I have a paid account and it gives you access to all the tests for being a paid member. And you can retake the tests every 24 hours I believe. I haven't done any because I take failing hard, but now that you reminded me I may have to start doing them. You never know what kind of information you can get out of them.

Budget: $250 to $500
Category: Writing, Editing & Translation
Description: The task is to read and analyze the list of the sites below and make a text based on these sites. First, you will read and analyze it. I don't want this to start looking like spam so I will stop posting on here. As I am sure Martincrow is a spammer.

I will throw in where I received the information for the sites that pay freelance writers. Master Dayton has an incredible amount of information and I highly encourage you all to look into it. If Chuck's essays can help you become a better writer, Master Dayton can help you get paid for it. It is a free blog so, I don't get anything for this. There are great opportunities out there for all of us. We just need to take advantage of them.

Good luck all.

Guru posts one-off freelance jobs, which is cool. But if you're looking for a career as a writer (in the corporate world, to pay the bills), let me suggest looking into becoming a Content Strategist; the newfangled term for a web writer.

I presently work full time as a content strategist for a bank dot com site and quite often I get calls from recruiters telling me there are not enough writers out there with web writing experience. There are open jobs and not enough writers to fill them. (Most corporate writers end up going into advertising because it's cooler).

I only mention this because I don't think too many writers know there is a solid career out there for web writers for corporate web entities. They call us content strategists, interactive content editors, web writers or whatever. but it really is just writing short copy for the web. And it pays well (assuming you have a college degree and some experience.) I used to work in advertising. This pays much better (and is less stressful).
