Hi and Hello! - . Webster's says that "hi" is equivalent of "hey" in Middle English--getting someone's attention. English is a strange and wonderful language.

I don't know that it is slang for hello, I think they are just both greetings.  Hey, hello, hi, howdy, how do you do, what's up (and the variations), hey, a (and the variations), yo; the list is endless.
