Too early, you say? After all, WAR2 has only just begun; Round 1 is only complete by 3 days. It doesn't make sense that stories from the battlefield would already be getting acceptance letters from publications.
And yet...
And yet they have.
So, without further ado, I leave this thread for those of you who are publishing your WAR2 stories. Let us know how things are going with the work you've done.
I'll make a list here. PM me the vitals and I'll post your hard-won victories.
1. Fritz Wolfe (writing as Jason Lairamore): "The Hardy Survive", The Blue Shift, scheduled Nov, 2013
2. Sound (writing as Matt [insert last name]): "The Black Spot", The Los Angeles Review of Los Angeles, scheduled 2013
3. Richard Thomas: "Surrender", The Booked Anthology
I'm using my round 1 story as the first chapter of a novel. I'm aiming to get the first draft done in six months.
I'm definitely in the market for a permanent pen for The Year of the Pig.
'The Hardy Survive' - forthcoming November 2013 publication of The Blue Shift magazine
correction: - my story has been moved to issue 1 - which is in may- to be in the same publication (in print) as Robert Silverberg and Mike Resnik. - which is all kinds of awesome.
Awesome ^ well done, Mr Fritz. Great start - a sell already!
I've sent out "Dollhouses and Jam" to 4-5 different places just to see what bites. Hope to post a success soon. Again, congrats to Fritz! And also, like jacks_username, I'm seriously considering expanding it to novel-length--something short and taut and suspenseful.
It'd be cool if we could compile a list at the top of those that are published. From what I read, I think there will be a lot just in round one that are published.
Wow, you guys are quick! I'm hoping to get some edits on We've Only Just Begun and get it out into the world, but I have a backlog of about 4-5 pieces waiting to be polished.
I can never work on two projects at once, so I do applaud you, Fritz for making us all envious of your multi-tasking glory. I probably won't be doing much with my current story or any futher WAR stories until I'm fully taken down and out.
Y'all are too fast... I haven't even sent out my War 1 stories.
i'm pretty sure my story from Round One of WAR2 "Surrender" will be accepted for the Booked Podcast anthology, untitled as of now.
Congrats, Fritz!
Multitasking? Ask Richard how many subs he has out at this moment. I bet it's over 50. Ha. Am i right? That be a number to shoot for.
-challenge: fill up ur duotrope active submissions to 50. Thatd take some doin.
And thanks all - the pub was a nice surprise
Lets fill up this list - may our voices roar
I have ten right now, and that's the most I've ever had. Haven't sent my WAR story out yet.
I've got about a dozen out. NOT to paysites, but that's gonna change now with Duotrope.
I just started submitting to a few paysites. Crossing my fingers on those, but I'm happy with any place tha'll take me.
Every time I see the word 'paysites' I think of my long and non-illustrious stint in the pornography industry. I once had a topic-branch in my VSS repo titled 'scary-fetish-paysites'.
I have 8 stories out on my fancy-dancy duotrope submission tracker. That is pitiful. And no stories out to my personal holy grail - Grain magazine. I think if I ever publish there, I will quit while I'm ahead.
57 to be exact. :-)
That's 8 stories total. Least markets per story is ONE (some reprints I'm trying to find a home for, which is actually kind of hard) most markets is 24 for "Chrysalis" a story I just got back from an anthology that failed, so it's at all of the journals that have ALREADY rejected my thesis materials. Those four stories ("Sugar and Spice," "Moving Heavy Objects," "Chasing Ghosts," and "Garage Sales") are taking a LONG time, mostly because they're at some brutal publications (average acceptance rate of 1-3%).
UGH.
GRAIN looks pretty cool. Unfortunately they are mail only and in Canada, what a pain in the ass. But I like the look of them, thanks Jeff.
Just got a rejection from Camera Obscura. Took a hundred or so days. I got excited once it got past that average rejection timeframe and closer to the acceptance average.
^yeah, CO is very cool. haven't gotten in there yet myself either. but i like them a lot. great target, Sound.
Yeah, I ordered a few of the magazines and I really like the look and feel of them. Not to mention the content is very good. Would love to be published there.
Ooh! I have three out now! This is big for me!
(Somehow submitting shorts is harder for me than was querying my book....that wound up being weirdly easy and un-upsetting, even when I got a gajillion rejections. Anyone else run into that? Or was it just that I was too fucking stupid to know what I was getting myself into when I started querying, and now I know better?)
I got excited once it got past that average rejection timeframe and closer to the acceptance average.
Is that a thing? I don't see it anywhere, but the duotrope interface makes my brain hurt, so maybe I missed it.
Yeah if you look at the listings acceptance and rejection percentages they list the average days for each type of response.
Ah, I see - based on my calculations... carry the 4... I am a terrible writer and I will never be published.
Oh, I'm complaining. I mean:
I am great at collecting rejections!
@ richard - i knew it!
@ jeffrey - who gives a shit about rejections - forgetaboubit
@ everybody - awesome
okay - i gotta get my subs up to richard standards - busy busy
I haven't hardly ever submitted anything. I signed up for durotype like you guys said but haven't had the time to navigate what to do exactly. I feel like I need to re edit before sending anything in. Hum, I need to ramp up my writing, editing and submitting. Blah. My real job is eating up my writing time!
if you guys don't put your work out there how can the world read it? there is so much talent here, really, start sending your work out.
side note: i will be publishing a Storyville column in January of 2013 all about the best markets, and i'll also post up my BIG LIST of over 300 places that I submit to on a regular basis. so, there's that.
^Cool, I can't wait for that.*
I've submitted The Black Spot to a few places. Hope to get a reply in a month or so. Anyone know of any good markets for horror that have a quicker turn around time? I'm an impatient bastard.
*Seriously, can I have it now?
^One Buck Horror has always been reliably quick to respond for me, two weeks abouts. Good quality place.
Nightmare is about 1-2 days. JJ Adams must crack the whip on his slushies.
I know. I honestly don't understand how he does it. I've wondered before if he clones himself.
Thanks. I'll try those out.

I'm stoked for this article.
yeah OBH and Lamplight are good suggestions. unfortunately a lot are closed right now. i'd consider 90 days to be a reaonable turnaround, so i'd add in Buzzy Mag (22 days), Clarkesworld (3 days), LORE (70 days), Shimmer (13 days), Shock Totem (40 days), Midnight Echo (30 days), and Uncanny Valley (25 days). Shroud is a favorite of mine, but they're closed, as is GUD, BULL SPEC, and Apex.
Cemetery Dance is supposed to be opening up their magazine before the end of the year. JUMP ON THAT if you can.
kinky!!
Cemetery Dance!?!? *does a happy dance for Cemetery Dance*
:D
I'll look forward to your column Richard. I did send to Glimmertrain, and they even answered back on one, but no dice on publishing. I bought writers market and found a bunch of contests to submit to. I'm gonna do some more editing and get some things out there.
@utah, haha yes i like to submit... to the workshop!
@JGB Don't you have a serial on Jukepop?
So, how much do you guys read or familiarize yourself with all these potential sites for publication? And how many hours are in your days? I only have 24. Where do you buy more?
@Otis, I'll sell you 3 of my hours a day for 5million bucks. You write better than me anyway so I don't need the time. Plus with all your extra writing time you should have that much money like by next month.
40 hrs a week work - wife and 3 kids under the age of seven - I give myself 1 hour a day to do what I can - w/e I can stretch that a bit. Really it comes down to sacrificing sleep.
Yeah, youse guys and gals with the kids and all that, I don't even begin to comprehend how you get it done. Fritz, you're my Hero Du Jour with already getting your WAR2 story published. Congrats, sir.
JR - with those 3 hrs a day I'd probably just tack on to my 90 minute nap per day (which is kind of the anti-Fritz).
I would so love a nap - but Instead I get coffee (the strongest possible)
Nap while you can - kids will not allow you, ever................ did I say ever?..... (unless you have but one, then that's a different ballgame).
wife, twins, dog, job. make the time, not the excuses.
(just kidding. i know how it is, bro.)
