Pixies! Ditto for Unwound- at one point I owned every KRS release from the 90's on vinyl- and Dazzling Killmen, that takes me back.

Emo's is now a shade of its former self. I do have the distinction of being the meanest bouncer in its history.

I like most of bands you just mentioned, particularly Muse, though I own a little something from each band you listed.

Among my favorites are The White Stripes, They Might Be Giants, Matthew Sweet, Beck, Amanda Palmer, Vince Guaraldi, The Raconteurs, Cheap Trick, Jack Johnson, Madonna, Joan Jett, Queen, Nirvana, The Hives, REM, AC/DC...I could go on.

I also have a thing for honky tonk, vintage Hawaiian & surf music & ska.

I saw them here in Providence. They were truly fantastic! I wish they'd put something new out soon. I saw The White Stripes twice and try not to cry myself to sleep at night when I think that Jack White won't play their songs live anymore. Ah well...his new stuff is awesome. I should be happy that he dabbles in as much as he does. That boy can't sit still.

OK, I just spent the last 20 minutes catching up on the day's quotes. My two cents:

Jonathan - I like your music! Jealous of you seeing The Raconteurs, but I did see The White Stripes a few years ago. And I forget who met Dave Grohl but now I'm REALLY seething with jealousy. Everyone else - I am so lame, I know NOTHING. But I can sing along with The Roots a little - does that count for ANYTHING?

Stories - holy fuck some of these flash stories are incredible!! Can't wait to keep reading.

My own story - I hated it and now I love it. I hope you all love it too. If not, JY will kick my ass.

And so it goes...

Ian's my new friend, Spencer Krug is a genius. Pixies-Love, feel they paved the way for Modest Mouse, Love especially older albums.

Love Dead Weather, Jack White another genius. On the same vein, The Kills are awesome.

Speaking of paved, Pavement, another favorite.

Went through the whole 80's punk and new wave, grunge and then the whatever the hell I like phase. I am pretty music obsessed.

My crowning concert achievement would have to be seeing Nirvana in a hole in the wall dive bar, pre-blow up.

Love Dead Weather, even more than *gasp* White Stripes. Modest Mouse (Lonesome Crowded West), Ministry, and SDRE (and Jeremy Enigk). Trail of Dead, anyone?

grossest concert moment: accidentally touching David Yow's naked ass as he crowd surfs in an ill-fitting tiger suit at at Jesus Lizard show. Second place: vomiting Chicago pizza on Rick Rubin at an overcrowded Nashville Pussy show at Lounge Ax, as their publicist. Third: being felt up by a very drunk Corey from NP during the SXSW Man's Ruin showcase, again as her publicist.

j. Mascis' voice turns my ears to jell-o but I do love their music. Instantly takes me back to sophomore year of HS.

I write to MUSE, Thom Yorke, Phoenix, Jeff Buckley, Death Cab and The Postal Service, The Cure, and Aphex Twin.

Jack White plays White Stripe songs on his solo tour. I saw him at the Hangout Festival and he opened with Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground. He played maybe 3 or 4 Stripes songs but I remember Ball & Biscuit and he closed with Seven Nation Army. He mostly rearranged them all and they sound fucking fantastic.

Matt, shut up. I'd just woken up after sleeping all day.

Kanye is a fantastic producer, and his lyrics aren't all braggadacio. That's just what they play on the radio.

Man I promise, she's so self conscious
She has no idea what she's doing in college
That major that she majored in don't make no money
But she won't drop out, her parents will look at her funny
Now, tell me that ain't insecurrre
The concept of school seems so securrre
Sophmore three yearrrs aint picked a careerrr
She like fuck it, I'll just stay down herre and do hair
Cause that's enough money to buy her a few pairs of new Airs
Cause her baby daddy don't really care
She's so precious with the peer pressure
Couldn't afford a car so she named her daughter Alexus (a Lexus)
She had hair so long that it looked like weave
Then she cut it all off now she look like Eve
And she be dealing with some issues that you can't believe
Single black female addicted to retail and well

Man I promise, I'm so self conscious
That's why you always see me with at least one of my watches
Rollies and Pasha's done drove me crazy
I can't even pronounce nothing, pass that versace!
Then I spent 400 bucks on this
Just to be like nigga you ain't up on this!
And I can't even go to the grocery store
Without some ones thats clean and a shirt with a team
It seems we living the american dream
But the people highest up got the lowest self esteem
The prettiest people do the ugliest things
For the road to riches and diamond rings
We shine because they hate us, floss cause they degrade us
We trying to buy back our 40 acres
And for that paper, look how low we a'stoop
Even if you in a Benz, you still a nigga in a coop/coupe

I say fuck the police, thats how I treat em
We buy our way out of jail, but we can't buy freedom
We'll buy a lot of clothes when we don't really need em
Things we buy to cover up what's inside
Cause they make us hate ourself and love they wealth
That's why shortys hollering "where the ballas' at?"
Drug dealer buy Jordans, crackhead buy crack
And a white man get paid off of all of that
But I ain't even gon act holier than thou
Cause fuck it, I went to Jacob with 25 thou
Before I had a house and I'd do it again
Cause I wanna be on 106 and Park pushing a Benz
I wanna act ballerific like it's all terrific
I got a couple past due bills, I won't get specific
I got a problem with spending before I get it
We all self conscious I'm just the first to admit it

Before this was the single All Falls Down, it was beat poetry he read at jams. You have to admit it's fucking fantastic. I have more, but that's soooo long. Yes, it's the entire song.

Sunny Day Real Estate - FUCK YES.

Also, Silverstein, Finch, and Saosin.

Nine Inch Nails is fucking amazing and I love the hell out of everything they produce. That's another one my mom played when I was young, along with The Wallflowers, another band I fucking adore.

Gordon, great stories on meeting Extreme, etc, and thank you for the compliment. I enjoy hearing those little music industry insider-type stories...good stuff. I've been pretty lucky to meet quite a few of my musical heroes as I used to work as a doorman at a hotel that catered to record labels looking for fancy, yet low-key accomodations for their touring acts.

I'm enjoying the flash in WAR, and the music talk as well. Good stuff, guys.

Also, wanted to throw in some artists I can't go through a day without hearing...Postal Service, Broken Social Scene, Land of Talk, the Rural Alberta Advantage, Junior Boys, M83...many others I won't list right now.

I used to listen to a ton of rap when I was in HS, I stopped around 96. When I hear a lot of the current rap, it's all too plush and produced and safe. To my ears, it's shit. The biggest offender is Kanye. He's soft. He's to rap what Winger was to metal. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it has to be gangster rap. It just has to have some edge, say something, do something. He's as edgy as a bowling ball. Any time I've been forced to listen to him all I hear is half-baked braggadocious lyrics and synth laden auto tune driven pop drivel that gets me to missing Chuck D.

I admit, I'm a bit of a music snob. And the dude sells a lot of records and has a lot of fans. I just don't hear or see it with the guy.

Otis, I tend to agree...though I'm a sucker for a catchy hook. I love Chuck D's voice. Shut em Down has to be one of the greatest rap tunes of all time.

Oh, and I forgot to mention...someone said something about Extreme's song on a Christmas compilation...it is AMAZING. I think it's called It's Christmas Time Again or Happy for You...something like that? I might be smoking crack. But yes, I love that song...THAT and Sarah McLachlan's version of Joni Mitchell's River are the two greatest Christmas songs of all time, I'm convinced. Oh wait, I forgot Boney M's version of Feliz Navidad - that is quality!

- Agreed.

I wouldn't say I quit listening to rap in the nineties, but I definitely think it died in '96. I graduated hs in '96 so I grew up with Run DMC, Public Enemy, NWA, Ice T and all that old shit. Then Big showed up and forever changed my life. I still don't think anyone to this day can touch his lyrical flow. Maybe Eminem, but that's about it. I do love the mid 90's west coast rap. Westside Connection, Mack 10, WC, Dre, Snoop, etc... But, I am a big Wiz Khalifa fan. Mainly because he's representing Pittsburgh, but I do like his flow. Still love Jay-Z. Reasonable Doubt is one of the best rap albums ever written.

My parents listened to classic rock every day and were deadheads. So as a rebellious teen, I liked some metal and loved rap. Going to HS in the early 90s also meant grunge, so i have a soft spot for that too. It wasn't until college that i went back to listening to a lot of the classic rock that was kind of forced on me in car rides and fell back in love with it. Then I became a deadhead, after Jerry died. I spent a lot of time going to a lot of shows and hippie fests, though I'm not much into the noodling. Can't stand Phish, save a couple of songs.

I like big riffs. The kind that could level a metropolis. I like sleaze. I also love Curtis Mayfield. One of my favorite tracks of alltime is John Coltrane "Equinox." So I'm all over the map. My only real rule is that it has to have some sort of soul, something that grabs at you. That can be done with a 9 piece band, a classic rock trio, or somebody sitting alone behind a piano or anything.

For me, too much music is just formulaic radio music that doesn't say anything, doesn't really do anything, it's just kind of there. It does approach any boundaries. It doesn't challenge you. It's just kinda 'meh - here's what we're serving up this year.' And it gets lapped up, forgotten about, and then added onto a "HEY REMEMBER THIS SHIT" mix cd infomercial. That happens with every genre over the last 50 years.

My favorite band for the past 7 years or so has been the Drive-By Truckers. They embody a lot of what's important for me as a listener.

All that said - if we all liked the same shit it'd be a boring world.

RMoon, I saw them live back in...I believe it was '05. They were great...performed quite a long set on both ends of the arena. Then at the end, a stage set rolls out complete with drum kit, guitars, mic stands. Without a word, they run to the rolling stage and immediately launch into a rip-roaring rendition of Sabotage. Blew me away. The crowd just...everyone went bananas. I'll never forget it. Also, Talib Kweli opened, which was a treat.

I love Sublime. I couldn't imagine seeing them with a new guy unless they did something different. Here's my thoughts on replacing dead or ex-members with new guys: Try Something Different.

Lots of fans just want to hear the songs note for note like it was on the record. I find that boring. It's been done. It's over. Let's move on. If you're going to do these beloved songs with a new player, treat them with respect, but rearrange, inject the new personality into it, breathe some new life into it. Otherwise, it's just a retro-cash grab.

I have strong feelings on this matter.

I won't get into tribute bands and how inherrently goofy they are at this time.
