shitty 80s metal
No such thing exists. 1985 was the best year in metal history, second being 1989. I have researched this in as many subgenres known to man. The only genuinely shitty 80s metal may be Stryper, and even they had some good songs. Conversely the summers of 1980-1981 were the best years in punk rock and an 8-month period around the summer of 1993 was the best period in rap music. These are unequivocal facts.

I've had countless people make their cases about Kanye, and I still hate him. He is talented, I'll admit that, and I even like a few of his songs. It's him, as a person, that I hate. Put the ego down Kanye. You aren't that important. Plus, Jay, Nas, Meth, Eminem, Pac and Biggie when they were alive, would crush Kanye in a battle. And please, don't mention Lil Wayne...

"Battling" isn't really much to fuss about in rap as a whole. Lyrically Lil Wayne is pretty amazing, considering he has to make two or three really fucking good metaphors/similes to own a song and then look like a goddamn gremlin from the film Gremlins the rest of the time. Eminem is also probably one of the most advanced lyrically, though I can't stand him. Kanye, lyrically, is derivative and just plain bad. As a producer he's astounding. If you don't like the purely inane ghetto shit, which I personally appreciate, the best rapper overall right now is Kendrick Lamar. He's a 90's throwback aesthetically, except his style is completely fresh.

I disagree about Lil Wayne. Listen to his lyrics. Sure, they're good, but alot of them aren't his. He's stolen more lyrics off Jay than anyone else. Plus, he repeats himself constantly. As for battling. It's the foundation upon what rap has become. Battling is one of the most important aspects of rap. Eminem wouldn't have a career if his battle rapping isn't so amazing.

The 80's wasn't just glam metal, there was traditional heavy metal, the beginnings of doom metal, speed metal which led to thrash metal and death metal and thrash-punk and grindcore, black metal with bands like Celtic Frost and Venom and Mercyful Fate, NWOBHM. If you recognize a lot of metal bands, check out what albums were put out in 1985 and 1989. I might be talking out of my ass, but it is an informed talking-out-of-ass opinion.
Summer of 1993 in Rap had that one A Tribe Called Quest, Wu-Tang, Return of the Boom-bap, Masta Ace, Enta da Stage, Doggystyle, Illmatic, Ready to Die, Digable Planets etc. Much more. All within a span of 6 months or so.

Extreme remains one of my all-time favorite bands (with the lamest name). But I'm a guitar nerd. Just a shame most people only know them for that one song. They were the Queen of the '90s.
I agree with your Queen comment (and the fact that more than words was overplayed). I remember having the Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure soundtrack and loved "Do You Want to Play?" quite a bit. The tour I saw them on was for the Three Sides to Every Story album. And actually, there's a great Christmas song by them from one of the Very Special Christmas albums that ends in a very Queen-esque way. Gives me chills every time I listen to it!
As for stories that would bore non-fans to death, I saw Cheap Trick in Providence and Gary Cherone came out on stage to help them sing Surrender. Apparently he was in town doing Jesus Christ Superstar and popped in for a cameo. It was pretty cool.

Bettencourt was a pretty bad-ass guitarist
And now he's got the best view in showbiz: backing up Rihanna. haha
So, my stories about the last time I saw Extreme. One, we were hanging on their bus, and the singer of my own band—piss drunk—drapes his arm around Gary Cherone (this is post-Van Halen, mind)—and slurs: "I don't care if no one knows who the hell you are, you're one of my biggest inspirations!" Awk-ward! … Two, earlier that afternoon I got/had to play for Nuno. Two of my closest friends own a huge music store, and he aggreed to do a rare appearance. The place is wall-to-wall with fans lined up, but no one's shopping, it's too quiet. And dude's running late. So they nudged me to stoke things, plugged me into his new prototype amp and one of his guitars. I'm being all shy about it at first (people hate wankers), but worked up a pretty good lather by the time Nuno walks in the door. Of course I clam up immediately, but he's all "Nah, nah, man, keep it going!" I also hadn't realized the amp was set up right in front of what would be his autograph station. I just kept telling myself Don't play any Extreme licks, Don't play any Extreme licks, Don't play any Extreme licks. haha Because I of course grew up learning that shit note-for-note. Can't remember the last time I was that nervous, and I got to play a few songs with George Lynch (Dokken) the year before that.
And kward, any "first-time sentence" is always a compliment from me, in appreciation of its utter randomness.

The Lynch Mob was playing the venue next door (the Pig Pen) and he and the roadies were getting a slice. I don't have anything to say to "famous" people, but for some reason I thought it was appropriate to let him know that my favorite Nightmare on Elm Street movie was part 3, The Dream Warriors.
