I have an older brother who tried to bring me to see AC/DC for my first concert around the same age, but my parents weren't having it. (I think it was The Razor's Edge tour). Then he tried for Def Leppard, but that wasn't allowed either. Eventually he convinced our mom to let me go see Extreme with him. Far cry from AC/DC, but I was still psyched to be at a show (the first of many) with my brother.

Well, the sweet thing about living in the Boston area is that there's world class musicians here. The sad thing about world class musicians is eventually nobody gives a fuck.
They'll start a side band, but still have the juice to hire really good musicians. Those really good aforementioned musicians will be your teachers, until it's time to go out on tour. They'll back a popular middle school dance song up for as long as the ride lasts. In that interim, between said song and tour, they'll impart on you playing tips that last you a lifetime, with some interesting tales.

Courtney, you're good. I like Taking Back Sunday, MCR (just saw them live last year), Death Cab, &c &c. I listen to most everything, and go through phases. I wouldn't know half the stuff I do if I hadn't 1. Grown up in the eighties and nineties, 2. Written for a 'zine and worked at a skate shop in HS, 3. I just... I don't know. I can literally admit that I like shitty music. Ke$ha is one of my favorite artists, no lie, and I will defend her to the death. The bitch got a higher SAT score than me and I was in the top 4% nationally. I love Britney Spears' new album because I like really poppy, girly music to work out to and to listen to when I need something mindless. I love Kanye West (which really isn't all that strange, even for really snobby music listeners) primarily because my boyfriend is obsessed with rap. I love a band called The Pretty Reckless that's fronted by Taylor Momsen, a girl a month older than me, and they're kind of pop-punk-metal and she sings about blow for blow, anal sex to get into a party, and doing meth and fucking priests and killing her ten-year-older-lover. I like Brand New and Bright Eyes specifically for their lyrics, TBS for their early sound and MCR because fuck I love their old shit. A Day to Remember is actually fantastic and have amazing lyrics, and I love anything with Andrew McMahon (Something Corporate and Jack's Mannequin) because he wrote an entire album about how he felt right before getting diagnosed with leukemia and it's terrifyingly prophetic.
I don't know what to do with myself.

@Court: No worries, girl. Like Emme, I grew up in the 80's and 90's. But to this day, TBS is one of my favorite bands. No one has ever written lyrics that compare to:
I'll do what I got to, the truth
Is you could slit my throat
And with my one last gasping breath
I'd apologize for bleeding on your shirt
Something Corporate is amazing. Andrew plays that fucking piano like a coked out guitar player. Konstantine? Ten minutes of 'Holy shit! This is fucking unreal!'
Saw both bands live, unfortunately I don't remember them. Beer. Lots of beer.
But Kesha? Ughh... I'll chalk it up to your being young. And I hate Kanye.
@Sparrow: Me First and the Gimme Gimmes version of Rocket Man is easily my favorite cover from a punk/ska, whatever the hell you wanna call them, band.
Courtney
from the Midwest is reading Monkey: A Journey to the West and a thousand college textbooksDecember 19, 2012 - 4:50am
TBS is seriously incredible. My favorite lyric:
Jynx me something crazy, thinking if it's three then I'm as smooth as the skin rolls across the small of your back. It's too bad it's not my style. If you need me, I'm out and on the parkway, patient and waiting for headlights, dressed in a fashion that's fitting to the inconsistensies of my moods.
Also, here's the thing about Ke$ha: popular music is not made to make you think. It's made to make you want to listen to it. Science has actually charted the chord changes that make teenage girls scream, that's why bands like Brand New have lyrics like "I'm paid to make girls panic while I sing." Ke$ha uses those techniques, but actually puts lyrics that are simplistic and minimalistic in an almost literary way.
I miss your soft lips, your white sheets, the scratch of your unshaved face on my cheek. I see your face in strangers on the street, still say your name when I'm talking in my sleep, and in the limelight, I play it off fine, but I can't handle it when I turn off my nightlight.
Imagine seeing that on some girl's Facebook with less rhyming, and attributed to Jodi Picoult. It wouldn't be hard to believe, and even Stephen King raves about Picoult's writing ability. The reason Ke$ha can pull it off and still seem like the fucked up party girl with shitty music is because that's her image and it sells.
I also like the Kardashian's because their entire image is calculated to sell things. I like women who know how to manipulate the system, what can I say.
Courtney

I have to run to the dentist with my sister, but when I come back, I'm making a motherfucking case for Kanye with lyrics to back it up. He is the shit and I will prove it.

Science has actually charted the chord changes that make teenage girls scream, that's why bands like Brand New have lyrics like "I'm paid to make girls panic while I sing." Ke$ha uses those techniques, but actually puts lyrics that are simplistic and minimalistic in an almost literary way.
I have to run to the dentist with my sister, but when I come back, I'm making a motherfucking case for Kanye with lyrics to back it up. He is the shit and I will prove it.
