My problem is that I've been struggling with the prompt and my idea is too grand. I attempted to solve that problem with an idea that is brilliant and twice as grand as the first idea. The amount of time just to research either and establish the voice I am aiming for in each means I could have them both done by March, maybe. So crap. Four days to go and I got nothing.

TomMartinArt's picture
TomMartinArt from Amherst, MA December 17, 2012 - 7:26pm

My idea would work much better at around 3,000 words. I've got a nice little idea that I'm afraid is going to feel cramped... but oh well.

Dino Parenti's picture

Try that in The Pit! My first idea was definately a 2,500+ concept. Even with the new concept, I was still closer to 1,500 words than 1,200. Got it down though, and tonight just need to polish a bit. Oh, and a friggin' title would be nice too!

Jonathan Riley's picture

One idea is a 10000 word concept. The other can be done in 2500 but I need like a month to research it. Yikes

Everyone else - I can't wait to start reading flash! I, um....need to learn how to DO flash! (Not learn how to flash - spent a Mardi Gras in New Orleans pre-Katrina...not to say I flashed...but I saw enough to last a lifetime...anyway...)

Up until 2:00 AM last night hammering out a firsty, will steal some hours from work today to polish it up.  Stories rarely work for me like this, but I had my title five minutes after receiving my prompt, general concept ten minutes after that.  Throw in three days of stewing to get to the core of the character and bam, I have something resembling a story.  Needs some serious work, but I'm comfortable with it.  Enough.

Grats Leah! I am in training for BACC and switch provisioning and they gave us pizza!

If you like The Waste, you should check out their side band, Cannabis Corpse. It's as awesome as it sounds. We used to play with all those dudes and the Page 99/Majority Rule kids. It's pretty much seven people making up fifty-six bands. They were way too good for us.

I don't get the apeal of Cannabis Corpse at all, but then, I'm mindblowingly finicky about my metal. For example: I can't stand Kreator, Destruction or Sodom.

Then try August Burns Red, I saw them in a basement actually, years ago. Lamb of God, of course. Parkway Drive is pretty good too.

OH GOD YOU'RE MAKING IT WORSE. If I had my way scandinavia would be largely barred from making metal at all. They just don't know how to write a riff. ...with the exception of Dr. Living Dead and a handful of others.

Listen Tom, let's deal with the real enemy here: MattAttack, for brigning up August Burns Red. However, based on his choice of music, you may want to go easy on him: he might cry and run his mascara.

TomMartinArt's picture
TomMartinArt from Amherst, MA December 18, 2012 - 12:22pm

I didn't even know August Burns Red. I've heard of them and dismissed them for what they turned out to be, never giving a listen until today, just before I hissed like a vampire at a very lame crucifix.

NikKorpon's picture

CC is a fun band. I don't listen to metal very often because, for me, it begins and ends with At the Gates. Though Darkest Hour's Mark of the Judas is amazing because, well, it's At the Gates. Slaughter of the Soul should be the only thing playing when talking about metal.

That being said, I came up in the 90s and played in punk bands for years and years and listen to Refused and Quicksand and Billie Holiday a lot. I also think Scandinavian Black Metal is fucking atrocious, though their documentaries are pretty gnarly.

TomMartinArt's picture
TomMartinArt from Amherst, MA December 18, 2012 - 12:25pm

Agreed about their documentaries. A very interesting time, some fascinating viewpoints. I wrote a (really bad) song back in 2008 called Black Metal Sucks that I now regret. It remains a lightning rod for attention and hate. If I'd known it was going to be this popular, I'd have put some effort into it.

I'm not with you on At The Gates, but I liked a few things on that album. Of course, that was just before I discovered Exodus.

JEFFREY GRANT BARR's picture

Refused was a great band. Or at least a great couple of albums.

Scandanavian Black Metal is amazing: not for the music, that's just a buzzsaw with someone in the background begging for help. But the entertainment value is through the roof!
