that picture was taken five years ago, utah. i was 39. so, suck it.

also, the way i see it, i assume somebody will make it to the finals of the winner's bracket having not lost a single round. SO, the winner of the LOSER'S bracke will have to beat that person TWICE in order to win it all. that's right, isn't it? holy crap. so if somehow i lost to rebecca in round two, went to the loser's bracket, and then won all the way to the finals, i'd have to beat her. twice.

wow.

I started trying to figure out the brackets and possible scenarios and then it got confusing for me so I went back to my original strategy of planning on winning every round (and realizing that WAR management knows what is best for me). More importantly, I realized the error of looking past the first round. As a firm believer in the Bill Parcells coaching tree (and a lifelong NYG fan), I realize that I can only take this one week and one opponent at a time. This is how championships are won, and why the title of BAMF and the obligatory wallet that Utah is buying as the main prize is coming to Somerville, MA.

(ps - if anyone wants to scout me, I have a story in the workshop, "Hooky" that could use a read or two. Excuse my shameless whoring. But I am opportunistic)

voodoo_em's picture

@Utah or Avery

Half the prompts drop on Friday, Nov 2.  The writers in those matchups write like hell for a week.  That next Friday, they turn in their stories and we post the polls.  At the same time, we drop prompts for the other half of the writers.  They, in turn, write like hell for a week.  We post their polls as we close the first half polls.

So, Rounds 1 & 2 will each take 3 weeks.

Wait... so us guys in group 2 have to write like hell AND read 32 stories? Pressure!!

This could mean that group 2 don't have enough time to read all the stories and those nearer the end get maybe half the votes as the first one, which always sucks, although with 64+ readers there should be enough votes to go around.

However, to make it fair you'll have to flip the groups for the second round, as in the bottom half get their prompts first, then two weeks of reading and group 1 get the badass write and read week.

...maybe?

wickedvoodoo's picture
wickedvoodoo from Mansfield, England is reading stuff. October 25, 2012 - 3:14am

^ I wondered about that.

Staggering the sending of the prompts is better than having all sixty four stories go up at once, but if it is only staggered by a week then it is a bit harsh on us in the second half of the bracket.

As my fellow voodoo master suggests above, having it turned on it's head for round two could work somehow - but then we have winners and losers brackets sepatating the group rather than top half and bottom half - and that means losers from round one that were in the bottom half might end up getting the brutal read-and-write-at-the-same-time week twice in a row, whilst some people never have to do it.

I'm just thinking back to the last war - the first voting week took a lot of time and reading. No way could I have gotten through all the stories if I had been writing my own to a deadline that week. Seems this needs addressing - because it would be a shame if us in the bottom half don;t have time to read or vote on any of the duels from the top half.

Unless I am being dense and not understanding your plan correctly. In which case ignore the hell out of me.

Flaminia Ferina's picture

Yeah. We could make a flash fiction 1st round.

avery of the dead's picture
avery of the dead from Kentucky is reading Cipher Sisters October 25, 2012 - 4:59am

Okay.  Yeah, you guys do understand.  Let me think about this.  If we do it differently, then we have add an additional 2 weekes to the whole process and I feel like it's going to lag a bit.  But I agree that if I'm writing my story, I can't read all the stories that are up.  I just can't.

BUT - would going second, reading all the stories, seeing the outcomes, whatever, then writing their stories, would that give the people in round two an advantage?  Wait.  No, it wouldn't.  Sorry.  I'm still drinking coffee.

Um.  What do others think?  There will be a ruling later.

Fritz's picture
Fritz October 25, 2012 - 5:17am

Vote. Add the week to round 1 and 2.  People will need the time to read. Yeah it will slow it down, but so what

Jonathan Riley's picture
Jonathan Riley from Memphis, Tennessee is reading Flashover by Gordon Highland October 25, 2012 - 5:43am

I would suggest dropping all the prompts at the same time. Everyone submits by the end of week 1. But still only post 32 in week 2 and 32 in week 3. That way everyone gets 1 week to write and two to read and vote. Unless that adds too much work for the defenders.

leah_beth's picture
leah_beth from New Jersey - now in Charleston, SC is reading five different books at once. October 25, 2012 - 5:47am

I second Jonathan's suggestion. That makes the most sense to me.

Or shorten the story length for the first two rounds. Which could make things interesting.  :)

wickedvoodoo's picture
wickedvoodoo from Mansfield, England is reading stuff. October 25, 2012 - 5:50am

Oooh, Jonathan is on a winner there! That could work - everyone gets the same length writing period, all the stories are up for the vote for the same amount of time, and the whole schedule is only extended by one week.

I like that solution.

Fritz's picture
Fritz October 25, 2012 - 5:50am

If youre to do that then just post all 64 and give us two weeks to judge
