The thing with music that isn't mainstream is that it's hard to find new stuff. Let's make a discussion where we share NEW stuff that we think people should check out.
I'm starting with Scroobius Pip, who I've recently discovered (thanks to Sage Francis an SFR) and am enjoying.
It kicks in around 00:31.
If you like Scroobius Pip, this is pretty awesome:
Also, Jesse Dangerously. Canadian Indie Hip Hop artist.
I have an unhealthy addiction to recommendations.
Jehst is a very talented lyricist and I need to research this "Scroobius Pip"
Everyone should check these guys out, they're from South Africa, really cool group.
betcha thought I was gonna try to self promote again, didn't you.
Tech N9ne might be a little mainstream.
DeathGrips http://thirdworlds.net/
Explicit, Sacreligious, Not-Safe-For-Work, -Church, -Sporting Events, -Anything in Public
it's nasty, really, so don't click on this and then tell the admins you got offended
I could not find anything coherent on the death grip site, I wanted to be offended.
That Pip kid is real good, but he does sound like a British Sage Francis.
In the long run, I can't resist, P2K!
JEAN GRAE JEAN GRAE JEAN GRAEEEEE.
No, seriously. Jean Grae. You can still download Cookies or Comas via http://www.djbooth.net/index/mixtapes/entry/jean-grae-cookies-comas which is a precursor to her upcoming Cake or Death.
Yeah. She rules like a ruling thing what rules.
Jean Grae is freaking awesome, her last two albums were amazing, collaborating with 9th Wonder and then Blue Sky Black Death.
Again, I don't know exactly where I'm drawing lines here. You mentioned Sage Francis in the first post, so I wouldn't go with him, I assume that if you know about Sage then you know Atmosphere. Sweatshop Union might be new to someone but I wouldn't, say, offer up Jedi Mind Tricks or Reflection Eternal, I assume they are well known enough in the underground community.I may well be too shallow in the underground when I go with Immortal Technique or stuff like that.
On the other hand, might I offer that virtually all French Hip Hop qualifies as "underground" to an American audience.
French hip hop then, well here's the Jazz Liboratorz. Instrumental usually but lots of nice guest MCs on their records.
That is real good stuff. Those beats are very smooth.
CunninLynguists are better than everybody.
Too late to mention Jay Electronica..?
Grieves:
Also, just found out Murs is touring. Some of his stuff is legit.
@Kirk, I had never heard of this Scroobius Pip guy, that was pretty damn awesome ;)
