I'm new to the community, having only joined up today. I was referred here by a friend of mine and I was needing some advice. I've finished my first novel and the sequel is already more than half-complete. I've gotten the contact information of several literary agents, but before I go and waste my time I need to know: What's a synopsis?

It's a very simple question and I know the basic answer, but I'm talking about a proper synopsis that you send with a query letter. They all ask for it, but I'm unclear of what to send exactly. Do I send just a few paragraphs that are intended to entice the agent or do I send a summary of the entire book? I was able to do the second, shortening a 300 page book into 3 pages, but am I going about this the right way?

Welcome to the pit. Dave should be along with the welcome jazz. My understanding is your query is the synopsis, and then of course there is a more formal one you send along if they specify. I would not send any of the MS unless they request it. Richard is pro at this, he should be able to get with ya.

This is a basic outline. It is by no means perfect. Link

That actually helps alot. I was pretty much shooting in the dark and had no idea what was being demanded of me.
