I don't read a lot of fiction, but really enjoy being grabbed and taken beyond myself. It can be any genre really, could be a touch of unexpected humour or a description that appeals to a more rarely felt emotion.

A while ago, I was stuck in a house for days, I was ill and there was nothing to do or read other than The Gulag Archipelago by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, it looked so heavy and bleak, finally in my desperation for a change of state, I started to read it, I thought it was a novel (series of) at that time, it was brilliant and took me far beyond my small wretched state. That's a the power of a good writer and a good book.Anyone else had a similar experience.

Go see Richard Herley on amazon.com. I've read Penal Colony and Tide Mill. Man must be a master woodworker on the side. I've got a couple more of his in my waiting to be read pile of electrons.
