Elmore Leonard, one of the greatest crime writers to have ever written in the genre, and one of my favorite authors, dead at the age of 87. R.I.P.
"If it sounds like writing, I rewrite it."
~E. Leonard
Holy shit, how did he die?
Damn...
It stinks but thankfully he left a ton to read. It's been a tough summer for Get Shorty: Gandolfini, Farina, and now Leonard. Love his Western stuff too.
Yeah, this really sucks. RIP.
Bad news. Heard about the hospitalization last week. He was writing good shit til the end.
First Iain Banks and now Elmore, just sucks man :(
Just finished the first Raylan Givens book as well. Spooky
Love JUSTIFIED. This makes me sad.
Elmore is always a joy to read, especially his dialogue. Definitely something to aspire to.
R.I.P.
This depresses the hell out of me. I've enjoyed so many of his books. His dialogue was something else.
I've seen many interviews he's given, and I always thought he was such an amazing guy. Sadly, I've never read anything of his... yet. I need to. Anyone have any recommendations for the best stuff of his to start with?
When the Women Come Out to Dance (short stories) might be a good place to start. Should give you an idea of his style and popular themes, and you get to meet Raylan.
I'll second When the Women Come Out to Dance as a good place to start. I'd only known him as a novelist so wasn't expecting much from his short stories, but that collection really impressed me (particularly the westerns. "The Tonto Woman" is an outstanding story). One of the greats for sure.
Thanks, I love starting with the smaller stuff, too, becuase it isn't too big a committment to honor if I don't like it. I have a feeling I will, though.
I feel so bad when I heard the news. He was my all time favorite writer. He will alwyas be remember with his good works! R.I.P
