Sad news. Denis Johnson has been my favorite writer for nearly two decades now.
Started with Jesus' Son, which is my all time favorite story collection, and the book I've read more than any other. Train Dreams is a near perfect read as well.
We discussed this on here years ago, but here's Tobias Wolff reading "Emergency" if anyone isn't familiar with his work (doubting anyone on this website isn't, though):
With Jim Harrison and now Denis Johnson gone, we've lost a big piece of a certain kind of writing and writer that I don't think we'll see again...
Thanks for posting that link. I haven't ever heard it. I will have to tonight.
Cool. There are some gems in that series. Not so much hearing the stories read, but hearing the guest author with the fiction editor of the New Yorker discuss what they love about the story and how it works. Some solid educational material for those of us attempting to hack an MFA.
^ Definitely. That ep is one of my favorites, too.
My favorite quote:
“All these weirdos, and me getting a little better every day right in the midst of them. I had never known, never even imagined for a heartbeat, that there might be a place for people like us.”
