My friend's dad has carambola trees in his back yard. Ever had a tree-ripened star fruit? Oh Emm Gee. They get so big and juicy... just pick it and dig in.
I've seen them in grocery stores from time to time, but they're small, green and tough. And not so sweet.

The show is veering off quite a bit, I think Kirkman made a concious choice with them to develop the story better fitting for a multi-season tv show. I stopped collecting the TPBs at like the 6th volume, pretty much because Kirkman's dialogue sucks.
