While I understand the reality that 85% of my subs are gonna get rejected, I still believe too much in the power of positive thinking, so I always first visualize it as an acceptance. It's not much of a letdown, just because of the quantity of experience. They've gotten easier to take over time as my confidence has grown and I know it's rarely the writing, but the fit or the space.
Richard
from St. Louis is reading various anthologiesAugust 19, 2013 - 5:37pm
well, what Gordon says is actually pretty smart. when i say that i expect the rejection, i mean i'm always prepared for it. funny. i just had this moment, a few days ago, where i saw the response from Cemetery Dance in my email box and i thought, "oh well, here's the 252 day rejection," and i caught myself, and said, NO, don't think like that, there's always a chance. so i opened with more of a "please say yes" instead of "no way they say yes." so i was seriously floored when it said we want your story. i actually IMAGINED the words DO NOT in front of want for a second. i do believe in picturing good things happening.
good advice, G•Man

Well, shut my mouth, I have a story on the long "honorable mentions" list for The Best Horror of the Year anthology edited by Ellen Datlow. It's for my story "Fireflies" that was in Polluto. That's a first.
Keeping my fingers crossed that I may still make the final cut for some other story, since I know she's seen Staring Into the Abyss. Maybe "Victimized" (one of my favorites) or "Twenty Reasons to Stay and One to Leave" since it's so weird, the format. I also know she's read my story "Flowers for Jessica" in Weird Fiction Review.
Dare to dream, yeah? Wish me luck.
I hope you all are sending in your work to her, as well as Paula Guran's Best Dark Fantasy and Horror AND Best American Mystery Stories. Y'all can write, dammit. SUBMIT!

I'm thrilled to announce the signing of Stephen Graham Jones. Dark House Press (where I'm Editor-in-Chief) will be publishing his fifth short story collection, AFTER THE PEOPLE LIGHTS HAVE GONE OFF, a fantastic compilation of dark fiction, in late 2014. This collection will feature some recently recognized stories, a few obscure titles, and even a little original fiction. Stephen is known best for writing horror, but excels in a wide variety of genres, including neo-noir, fantasy, science fiction, and crime—all with a literary bent. He has 17 novels and collections out (or forthcoming) including All the Beautiful Sinners, Ledfeather, and Demon Theory. He is constantly nominated for awards, in the various “best of” anthologies, and one of the most prolific and impactful authors writing today. His stories have appeared in Black Warrior Review, Cemetery Dance, Gulf Coast, Hobart, Juked, Weird Tales, and hundreds of other elite publications. Stephen will also have a story, “Father, Son, Holy Rabbit” in our first anthology, THE NEW BLACK, out in early 2014. We are honored to have him at Dark House Press.
