Avery and Utah are going to kill me, I know. And in real life, not fiction. But damn it, I want another war. How can we make it so that it is easy on the people who have to monitor it? I just want one because im thinking I need to work on the topic story. I have five stories I'm working  on, but war makes me focus and get details done on a totally new project. Hard as it is to run guys, it's the heart of Litreactor, I think. When do you think we will start another?    Also, I say keep it to Litreactor subscribers, not make it so big. Just thoughts, with love.

I don't think there IS a way to make it easy on the people running it, unfortunately... and it's always been closed to subscribers only. I think the only way to have it running on a regular basis would be to have more people willing to put in the time and effort to make it happen.

Though, personally, I still haven't edited/submitted most of my stories from the last WAR, so I don't know if I'm quite ready for WAR 3.

I'm not ready for WAR3 yet either. Same reasons as you Renee. I think it should be a once a year deal or maybe twice a year tops because it does run so long, unless they figure a way to shorten it. Maybe an elimination round pre battle for those who don't automatically quallify, to cut it down to a 32 instead of 64, just brainstorming again,

Either way, I'd be happy to offer my services in helping organize and run the next war if they are needed.

I spent some time last november on this idea, a war that could be finished in a month (so one every month) and not needing anyone to "run" it. The best I got was this.  One match is sixteen players in four groups of four, lineup decided in order of subscription. Each player reads and votes on the other players in his groups stories. That means only 3 stories each round, and there's only two rounds lasting 10 days each. 7 days for writing, three days for reading. You can of course have as many different matches going on at the same time in a month as you wish.

Stories are submitted to the workshop so its probably best if you've saved up 30 points to play.

The story with the best score passes through (stars system). Ties are dealt with by first submitted passing through.

Anyone can read your workshopped story and mark it but only the score of those playing in your group count towards the game. There is no anonymity but everyone will be able to see the score and small crit you gave so you'd better be able to justify it.

First round passes four players forward leaving 12 behind.

Second round sees the twelve remaining divided into three groups of four. They play and three get passed forward.

The four who were passed forward in the first round play and pass one forward to be that months winner.

At the end you will have 9 people who didnt get off the starting line (Victim), 6 people who won at least one match (Thug), and one overall winner (Bouncer).

The match is over in 20 days leaving you ten to do crits and gain points so you can play again in next months.

Dropouts.  Any group of four can sustain one dropout without it affecting the game. (You just read and vote on to other peoples stories instead of three.)

To start a match you open two threads, one where you do the bookkeeping, signups, standings, etc. And another thread for chat in order to keep the first thread clear and easy to reference.

If there were enough players for four matches of sixteen in one month (very unlikely) just do a third round... some bits get tweaked, I've got the rules at home.

I dont really know if the system would work, and I haven't got a name for it (Barfight???). But I've been wanting to try it out for some time. Sorry if it's all a bit confused sounding but I'm at a friends house, rushed and no where near my design notes.

Let me know if any of you like the idea...

H

Jesus wept.

Yeah, I'm not really there yet.  I have some ideas and there will be another one, but not right now.  It really cuts my own personally productivity down to nothing (or that's the excuse I'm using) and I'd like to start enjoying writing again before I start trying to help you all enjoy writing again.  Maybe over the summer.  How's that sound?

Or, in other words, fuck off.  I do what I want.

(thanks for liking stuff we do...really...it's nice)

GIVE PEACE A CHANCE!

No, really, I hate peace.  I love WAR.  And WAR2.  And I'm glad you do, too, Cove.  And thanks for wanting another one.

I'm with AD on this at the moment.  I might be on her side of the fence even more than she is.  I am, after all, the person who burned out about 33% of the way through the last one and retreated to my hermitage to lick various non-WAR wounds.  And so my opinion might not amount to much, but I will smear it on things anyway.  Like hummus, only tastier.

How long ago did we crown the new WAR champion?  Like a month, right?

It has to be longer.

I thought I was jonesing for WAR again after the last one, so I got myself in a thunderdome battle for the fix, and forgotten how much tension and anxiety it brings me. I'm perfectly fine waiting a bit for the next big tournament.

Thats two (including myself). 14 more to go. I'm off on holiday tomorrow until next sunday so I may vanish for the week (again). I too miss the motivation of war and need the competition. I'll set up a thread when I get back.

Summer sounds like a good war time. It was less work for those of us who lost battles early on the game, which is probably why I'm ready for another. But yea, I know it's a lot of work. I'll be happy when you guys decide to host another.

I want to do preliminary rounds to qualify for the next war.  My idea being that I give them same prompt to 6 people and then match them in polls of 3 per poll.  And you won't know who you're writing against.

or something

hmmmm...what if it was flash fiction (<1000 words) and like you said, Avery, you set up a poll. you have 3 days. same prompt. cut the field in half each time (by votes). starts with a relatively small number, maybe 16 like was said above. maybe toss ALL people that are interesetd into a random drawing, and pick 16 out of the "hat" and that's the field. the whole thing could be done in 12 days.

thoughts?

^ I think you forgot to add reading & voting time on stories when you worked out the days, Richard :)

Otherwise sounds like a fun mini war, I think you'd definitely get a lot of interest & hopefully the continued commitment of everybody reading ALL the stories.
