I recently had a bipolar revelation grown from OCD roots. For years I have wanted to try and put together an anthology but never got enough interest but now that I have met my kindred spirits here, I dare think it possible. The idea for the anthology is simple enough, its based on madness. True psychological mental illness, no supernatural, no sparkly vamps, no wolves with 6-pack abs or ghosts with a hardon for vengeance. I want it to for all of take place in the world we live in at its scariest. True mental illness is frightening. Show me phobias and psychosis. Severe OCD or clausterphobia but the key is to make it unique in some way we haven't seen before. Your story can be satirical, sadistic or just plain creepy but it does have to have entertainment value. Im not putting together a textbook. The rarer the illness the better. See the movie Burning palms if you havent, its an anthology movie. The last story in particular is fucking insane. That movie illustrates some bizarre human behavior. Just no human centipede stories, im not going for gross out. The tentative deadline will be January 15th, 2012, 2500 words ideally unless your story is awesome. I can't promise payment yet, this could be great exposure for all of us. If we can't get it in print, it will be a kindle book but I promise to advertise the fuck out of it even if that means money out of my own pocket to do so. I know an amazing photographer who can do the cover. Let me know what you think. If any two mental illnesses match I will pick the better story. Also you can workshop the stories here in the forum so it will be a community process.

I have a story that would work, but it is 7000 words, and that reduced by constant revision and redrafting from 10,000. Ah well. This does sound very interesting and I think I will have to root through my idea notebooks for something that can fit.

Good luck, and I admire your ambition!

misskokamon's picture

I'd be all over this, except:

My story will ideally be over 30k words, and

my story does have a ghost in it. Well, maybe. It's how you perceive it. Is it a real ghost, or a manifestation of the horrors that haunt my main character? You know, that sort of thing.

Though I could probably cut it down to 3,000 words. Most of the middle junk doesn't need to be there, I guess.

Anyway, this sounds like an awesome idea.

Bradley Sands's picture
Bradley Sands from Boston is reading Greil Marcus's The History of Rock 'N' Roll in Ten Songs November 11, 2011 - 5:58pm

30k is a novella, not a story. You should try to get it published as its own book. Horror novellas are very common in the small press. Or perhaps you could try to get a full-length book published that includes the novella along with a few extra stories to lengthen the book.

Going from 30k to 3k is an extremely large amount to cut, although it's definitely worth it if it improves the story. But don't do it just so you can turn a novella into a story. Although perhaps you can have both a story version and a novella version and get them each published in different places. Such as the story going in an anthology and the novella going in its own book.

misskokamon's picture
misskokamon from San Francisco is reading The Moonlit Mind November 11, 2011 - 7:41pm

Thanks for clearing that up, Bradley. I guess I use all those terms interchangeably. Well, except for Novella.

The truth is the original story was written some time ago for a graphic novel. This year I'm writing it with the goal of making it a novella, so I'm adding an extra demension to the tale and really amping up the madness infecting my main character.
But yeah, I see your point. a 3k story and a 30k story novella are two different tales completely. It's more of what kind of tale I want to tell for this character, when it comes down to it.

I wanted to add that I was writing this as an exercise, with no intention of getting it published any time soon. It's, uh... it's kind of a NaNoWriMo thing and I don't plan to edit it when I'm finished. Not right away, at least. Maybe in the future? I needed a break from my current WIP, so I'm using November as an opportunity to take a breather.

But thanks for the advice!

Script writing for comics and prose writing are a lot different as well. Before I wrote books, I wanted to break into the comic industry, but I wasn't exactly succesful. There were a couple of years when all I wrote were scripts and I have a lot of old ones on my hard drive.

@miss, it's up to you if you want to edit it down that much.  I don't mind the ghost aspect if it's ambiguous that it might be in the character's head.

@Waterhouse, would love to see what you got.

@RMoon, thanks, I am exciting.  I really think this could be an awesome anthology and with all the great writers on this site, I'm hoping we can network and get the word out about it and generate interest.  Maybe get it advertised on websites etc.  If anyone wants to take the call for submissions I wrote and put it on their website, I would appreciate it.

I mean, the stories don't necessarily have to be "horror" but personally I find horror to be the things in life that most people don't see.  The silent horror of people's lives who think that their reality is normal when it is anything but.  Example:  TV shows like Hoarders, Intervention, etc.  I guess if there was a theme to the anthology I would like it to be, "This is my normal.  The hidden realities of mental illness".  Like don't you ever wonder how that homeless guy on the screencorner screaming at himself ended up that way.  Or if that 80 year old lady wearing the Juicy t-shirt and short shorts is out of her mind or really thinks she looks sexy in that.  Just go wild.  If you wonder how weird I mean, watch the movie "Burning Palms" or "Happiness" but also with the sensitivity and understanding of how mental illness works like with "Sybil" or "Girl Interupted".  I'm not out to make fun of people's fears or illnesses but to illustrate them in an entertaining way.

Please do and if anyone needs a little inspiration.  Here are a few of my favorite mental illnesses.

Munchausen by proxy disorder, Munchausen is when a person pretends to be ill in order to gain sympathy or attention like pretending to have cancer so people will feel sorry for you but a person who has Munchausen by proxy will make others sick, usually a child and keep them ill to get the attention and sympathy of others.

Body dysmorphic disorder is when a person becomes obsessed that a part of their body or something is wrong with the way they were born, sometimes it can manifest in just excessive plastic surgery but there are those who get obssessed with the idea that they shouldn't have a leg or an arm and want to cut off their own limbs.

Nice one, Moon.  So many possibilities.  I'm saving necrophobia for myself.  Bradley and I are conversing, he's helping me to try and figure out how to best do this.  I would like a print version of the book instead of just kindle.  Pretty much anyone can publish a book on amazon these days, although I think they take a small percentage of the profits of the sales.  Although I am thinking of this as less of a sales book than a way to get our names noticed.  Maybe Craig Clevenger would help us out and get a publisher to look over the stories if he likes them.  I am thinking about asking him when the project is a little more put together.  I really haven't seen a good anthology about phobias/mental illnesses.  The most important thing for me is them being medically accurate and not just a stepping stone to base a story off of.  The illness needs to drive the story, I want the mental illness to almost be the main character of the stories because the illness consumes your main character so completely.

@Alien... I'm digging this idea. Paid or not, this is definitely a way to get our names out there, and if you can get Clevenger's name to go with this... Shit, the possibilities are endless. You have a deadline in mind? Will you be submitting on here for critiques? I'd like to work with you on this project, if you want an extra hand. I've got more free time now that I'm single. This would not only get my foot in the door, but keep my mind occupied.

Well I was looking for someone to help me edit it.  Right now I'm reading about amazon's publishing policies.  Supposedly you can do print copies through them and pay them 39 dollars a year to advertise for you.  Read it over and let me know what you think.

http://mashable.com/2011/07/19/self-publish-amazon-createspace/#comment-...

The deadline is January 15th, 2012 right now.

Ideally, I would like to get a professional publisher to do it but if not, I will self publish.

Now to get quality submissions.  I encourage everyone to put their story up on the writer's workshop before they submit it to me.  That way, we are using the website but also polishing our pieces to perfection before publication.  Although I don't want to discourage people who aren't subscribed to the website from submitting but ....you know.  I will probably have to go outside this website to ask for subs if I don't get enough subs here.

Yeah, if you post it in the workshop and mention that you want to submit it for the anthology, I can read it over there and give you feedback plus it will give you a chance to rework it.  As for everyone who wants to submit who isn't a paying member, I won't say no since I really want as many subs as possible so I can pick the best 12.  I am researching the best way to get this published right now but right now I just want really kick ass subs.  That includes me too.  I want to write a story for the antho and I will put it in the writer's forum and I want honest feedback.  I don't think I am any better than any writer on here, if my story sucks I want you to be honest and tell me.  I know I can go over the top sometimes as I've been told.  So I really want to mold a story that will work.  I'm going over mental illnesses right now and phobias.

subs can also be sent to me at my private email:  dangrn77@hotmail.com

and if you have any questions you can PM me.

(Another movie recommendation:  the movie "May".  I don't know what you would call her mental illness but that movie fascinates the hell out of me and I realized that my main character in my submission for the writing contest on here was a lot like her.)

If you want to subscribe to the website, there should be a link when you go to workshop subs that tells you how to do it.

I am thinking of changing the name of the anthology to Psychosis: tales of madness instead of necrophobia. The buzz seems to be growing on this project. I am going to request subs outside the website soon and see if anyone bites. I emailed Craig about possibly making a submission and I'm waiting on that. If we could get Chuck to write a short story for this anthology too then I would be in literary heaven. Plus it would help us when trying to get a real publisher to look at this. So work hard on your subs, you never know. I am still debating on which illness to pick. I already got someone for necrophilia so that's taken.

Q: Is this too funny for the conditions?

Strange, it's been an obsession of mine  to know what a human brain feels like. When someone dies KIL LHARRY they become a cadaver. Basic, true,  but it's important. Everything stops moving. Biological gridlock, even. It's the moment when the bomb goes off in the stadium. The time when Daddy's nine millimetre ends up in the cafeteria, pointing at the guy who gets all the girls. The moment of pure, tranquil beauty. RIP OU THIS TRACHE AHARRY The moment where fucking nine pills could drop, and each one would be louder than a USELESS plane taking YOU'RE FUCKING USELESS off. And now, c'est l'heure, as they say. This guy's head, it's like candied yam inside. All mush and no neurons. Begs the question, what did he do with it when he was alive, since it's so fucked up now? Hannibal Lecter could drink this in a slushie.

I would space it differently. Formatting is crucial when you're writing craziness.

I am not opposed in principle to the idea of a collaboration, but with "Conversation at a Hanging" I was going to make it kind of a deeply personal and nuanced story about managing the disease, I mean, I've written straight crazy schizophrenia before, I just wanted to take the subject seriously in and of itself, and cut out any external characters so that I could rely on specific voices to provide a contrast and to illustrate the struggles of the protagonist without ever leaving a single room and with limited motion, but lots of yelling at the voices and begging and cajoling. I don't know how well that would work with the sort of scizophrenia you are going for.

@RMoon, is it called Cotard? I have it every time I eat space cake. I always experience those very long 5 to 8 minutes when I think I'm dying - then, when I'm dead, it all ends and there's a whole different level of consciousness, not the afterlife.

@Typewriter, your bit of story is kinda scary. It reminds me of hardcore skizos that you can hear answering to the voices. It might work, as a possible style.

I am lately researching demonic possession for personal purposes - hehehe - does it apply as a form of mental condition? That, or also synesthesia. It blows my mind, synesthesia..

I'm not talking lighter, I'm talking about writing about a suicide attempt. Or a hostage negotiation. Possibly an attempted murder. I mean, it all depends on how you see it. But usually one person trying to kill himself is considered a suicide attempt no matter how many personalities get involved.

I may recreate this thread with the new title of the anthology, Psychosis:   A journal of mental illness.  Until then, can I get a list?  I kind of want to keep track of who is planning on submitting something and which illness you chose.  So if you could just put your name and the illness you want to call, it would probably help us avoid too many repeats.

Anyone want to claim these?

Schizophrenia:

Pica:

DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder):

Stockholm Syndrome:

Bipolar/Manic Depressive:

I have a self mutilation and necrophilia already and drug induced psychosis.

I know Moon said he wanted to do Cotard syndrome.

Here are some others that would be cool to include in the anthology, feel free to research them.

Fregoli Delusion:

Reduplicative Paramnesia:

Munchausen by Proxy Syndrome:

Trichotillomania

Apotemnophilia

Pedophilia is also considered a mental illness and Alice in Wonderland Syndrome.

Hybristophilia

Cast your net wanderers, let the psychosis begin!

Well, if anyone thinks they can do a better job then they are free to write a story using the same illness and then Moon and I will pick the better of the two stories.  Also you can workshop your story and get feedback and I can judge it based on votes there too.  I kind of want this to be a full community project, I want to be the co-editor but I also want everyone to feel like we picked the best stories for it if I am going to try and sell it.  I'm pretty good about stalking publishers.  There are a few people I know who I am going to try to get to read this once we have it completed.

For now I will call dibs on DID.  You can do schizophrenia.

I'm having a short story getting published in an anthology coming out soon. I won't mention the title, due to the contract that I signed. Complicated contract stuff.

I'm wondering if all these non-paying open submissions are worth it. Do they have any higher merit than vanity presses or self-publishing?

I will probably submit something to your anthology. But only if you have a website for it or even a blog.
