My theory: dogs and/or cats should have 1-2 syllable names, containing one consonant that stands out (like a fricative? is that the name for it?).

Examples: Kurtz, Fritz, Spock, Yoshi, Smokey, Pixie.

But that's just my theory, based on how quickly my pets learned their names.

What about Melville, or Mumford (like the Amazing Mumford from Sesame Street, not the folk band). He looks like an M-name to me.

McClane.  Named after John McClane from Die Hard. Starts with an M and he was pretty badass.

Shelties are scottish, pugs are chinese.  For some reason, that mix cracks me up.  I just picture a Chinese person talking with a Scottish accent.   "Aye, Rassie.  Tha' haggas rooks dericious, ken?"

@Alex It's my first Scalzi book, though I've been following his blog for a few years. Go figure. I really like it so far—more, actually, than Terry Pratchett's stuff, which is similar.

I love "Schlug". It sounds like Sean Connery saying "slug".

My friend's wife is half Scottish, half Japanese. She's fantastic and crazy. Talks like an American, though.

Alex Kane's picture

@Emme: Cool, I'll have to check it out. Fuzzy Nation was awesome. Great dialogue, and the main character is one of those loveable-asshole types. Scalzi's hilarious. Chatted with him briefly at the Tor Books party last month, and he seems like a great guy. I think he may have been even more intoxicated than I was.

Zeus is closer to my style of naming.  Mythological or from folk tales/stories (Merlin?).  I tried out every name so far on the dog, and it just doesn't fit him.  I'm usually good at naming things (well, nicknaming things), but I'm really fucked on this one.

Well, if you're going that route, he's a little guy so he's clearly a Puck (and small and black so "puck" fits, too)

Mustardseed (to stick with the theme)

Oberon

Mordred

Myrddin (Welsh name of Merlin)

Garm

Raistlin

Erebus

Baldr

Sirius

D'Artagnan

(Full disclosure: my pets are named after video game characters, Star Wars characters, Voltron, and the city of New Orleans. It generally takes me 2-6 weeks to name a new pet.)

Emma C's picture

PUCK

Hob is good, too, but it's awfully close to "nob".

Is the puppy simple? If so he could be a Hodor.

bryanhowie's picture

The puppy is pretty clever.  He can't solve a rubik's cube, but he does poop outside.  And it's way more important to me that he poops outside.

Emma C's picture

Nice. My puppy poops outside most of the time, but when it happens inside she always eats the evidence. I don' t know whether that's clever or just brave.

Going a bit obvious here, but could go with Odin or Loki.
And I'm not commenting on the photo. :-) Too many possibilities.

I like Agent Coulson, when he's bad, you can call him Agent Orange.

Or maybe Doctor Von Optimus Bigglesworth Gojira Wellington Barks-a-lot Smythe, III (the third).

I love long names, but I keep getting flak for suggesting them.  I wanted Rufus T. Firefly, but my cousin has a cat named Rufus.  Puck is winning so far.

(Odin or Wednesday were tried out on the dog, but he didn't seem to respond.  Loki is too chaotic to name a puppy and expect him not to be a monster.)
