Y'alls need to go out and see Drive while you can. Definitely one of the best movies I've seen all year.
I will put it on my Netflix list, or whatever my mail-order DVD company is calling itself this week.
@A. Mason Carpenter
I would really, really urge you to go see it on the big screen. It's a movie that does a ton with visuals, and I don't know if a home theatre would really give you the full experience. But, above all, go see it. It's an instant classic, and you'll feel that way the moment the movie is over.
I've been watching Dazed and Confused too much again lately.
This is on my list to see this week. I missed all of the summer movies I wanted to see, so I will see this, then see THE WOMAN, on the 14th!
Want to see Drive, but my local cinema isn't showing it. pfft!
I recently watched Duel though (lots of driving - 70s style). The Godzilla sound fx at the end was cool. For those that don't know, it's the same sound when Jaws dies.
Anyone have any fun film facts?
I feel like Hancock was a much more regretful venture than Wild Wild West
I've been hooked on the Big Lebowski lately.
That, and my Holy Trinity of Victorian Movies (Sherlock Holmes, From Hell, Bram Stoker's Dracula), and the Tim Burton collection for Halloween.
Pretty soon, it will be time for the Saw-a-thon for the year! :3
I have been introduced to the Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns and have fallen in love with them. I am excited about the Tarantino's spaghetti western project, Django Unchained.
Also revisting the classic monsters and plan on watching The Invisible Man again soon to get into the Halloween spirit. This reminds me...The Thing is being remade (or a prequel...confused by the title being the same if it is a prequel) but it can't beat the feel of the hand crafted special effects or Kurt Russel. Will I give it a fair chance? I'm already bias, but if my buddy can get me into the theater for free...I'm all for it.
Sergio Leone is awesome. The Man with No Name triology and Once Upon a Time in the West are some of the best films ever made. A Fistful of Dynamite is pretty good but it kind of drags on toward the end. I still have yet to see Once Upon a Time in America, I can't seem to find it anywhere.
Funny that you mention Tarantino. His films are probably the only ones that compare to Leone's - they both have a perfect balance of drama and comedy, absurdity and authenticity.
All Coen Brother's movies are amazing. Even the not so good ones are amazing in my book.
Not too shabby.
I have a torrent for The Ides of March on my computer just waiting to be watched.
That Avenger trailer looks sick. I've been looking forward to that for a very long time.
@razorsharp: Yes, Leone is probably one of the greatest filmmakers in history. And like you, I'm dying to see Once Upon a Time in America, but can't seem to find it. Saw the Blu-Ray at Wal-Mart, but fuck Blu-Ray and fuck Wal-Mart.
Also, I think Michael Mann, David Fincher, and J. J. Abrams are three of my all-time favorite directors.
2009's Star Trek, Fincher's Zodiac, Fight Club, and Social Network, and Mann's Collateral, Miami Vice, and Public Enemies are definitely among my top twenty-five or so favorite films. (Sometime I'll have to make a list on my blog, just for fun.)
Fincher's awesome.
After watching The Avengers trailer, I had that giddy, heart racing feeling I got when I was younger and the Batman the Animated Series theme started playing (love that series). I need to watch Thor and Captain America still...I'm behind. I have watched Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes Animated series which I enjoyed. Now I'm on an Avengers kick.
I need to watch 3 Days Of The Condor.
Just watched American Beauty. Makes me want a smoke but have an agreement with the missus that I'll keep my swimmers healthy while we try. It's a great film--hammy satire.
@Gonzo - American Beauty is my number one favorite movie. Ever. If you liked that you should check out Magnolia.
Kevin Spacey is genius in the American Beauty.
I love it. Not like. Love. And I will. Thanks.
@Alex J. Kane -me too -Michael Mann's movies are among my favorites. I see them all at the movies and I always look forward to them when I hear they're coming out. I heard he was doing a new HBO series but I forget the name of it. It's coming out soon, I think.
Has anyone seen MOON staring the great Sam Rockwell? very good!
Moon is an excellent movie. I recommend that one to people all the time. If you liked Moon , you might like Triangle too. It's another movie not a lot of people have seen that is really twisted.
Moon is phenomenal! Rockwell's one of my favorite actors, for that film, Choke, Iron Man 2, and Gentlemen Broncos. Oh, and as the evil little prick in Green Mile.
Thanks Pete, I'm def gonna check Triangle out. And Alex, Gentlemen Broncos was magnificant!! I also like Rockwell's performance in Hitchickers Guide... and Conviction
Some other favorites of mine are, I Heart Huckabees, Momento, Andrei Rublev, The Thin Red Line, Children of Men, Buitiful, and many more
Yeah, Conviction was friggin' great. Haven't seen Hitchhiker's Guide, unfortunately. May have to go track that down...
The book is worth a reading as well
"The Thing" prequel this friday. Discuss?
I don't know what to say about it. It could be yay, meh, or boo. I'm wondering how they're going to surprise me.
I think the story is going to be really well done, but the visuals I think they are going to get all wrong for the atmosphere of the piece. Maybe I just love the original too much to be unbiased.
Anyone see Ellis's tweet? Says he's just finished reading Roger Avary's adaptation of Glamorama and it'll be directed by him next year. I could do with a bit of alone time.
^ I'm going to move to the mountains for a little while.
Those specks are gonna look awesome in 3D.
/flags as offensive
I thought about posting "Starring James Vanderbeek" but the picture said it all. Even if its my own private joke.
I mean jeeze though, look at those cheekbones and that sweater vest. You never know where the Beek is going to show up.
Wow, I kept reading that as directed by Roger Ebert and I was very confused. Cool my joke does hold some merit then.
He wasn't bad in Rules of Attraction. Probably the best Ellis adaptation. This is a serious subject, Jack.
I never read Glamorama. A 3D movie about sleeping pills and shampoos, well I'm sure this was bound to happen. Too bad it had to be Glamorama though. Its too much to think about...like North Korea or AIDS.
Can't wait to see The Rum Diary tommorow.
Once Upon a Time in America is one of my favorite movies. Why did a few people mention that they can't find it? It's almost 4 hrs long, so maybe Netflix doesn't have it because of its length, but Amazon sells the two DVD set (because it's too long for one disk) for $10.99.
Amazon loses contracts with some of the movies. I need to watch that, I'm not really into 4 hour movies though unless its Tarantino. I still need to watch Chinatown also.
It's totally worth it. You'll forget it's that long while you're watching it.
They lose contracts with some movies? Are you talking about the on-demand stuff? They have it for $2.99 to rent, although some people may not want to watch the entire thing at once and I have no idea the specifics about how long you can rent it or if it's difficult to go back to the place where you left off and all that stuff.
When you try rent certain movies on netflix and it says unavailable but it has the cover, I think that means they lost the contract with that movie. I cancelled netflix, they're too expensive now. I'll download it on utorrent.
Oh, but you said, "Amazon loses contracts with some of the movies," so of course I thought you were talking about Amazon.. The movie is available on torrent sites. Make sure you get the full version rather than the version that the studio originally released and cut like 2 hrs out of. I heard it really sucked. Some critic said it was the worst movie of the year. And then when the full-length version was released, she said it was the best movie of the year. Although you might not have to worry about downloading the butchered version since there may not be any torrents of it available. I highly doubt it ever came out on DVD. Maybe VHS.
Oh, I did say Amazon. Thanks I'll have to check that out. De niro is amazing in a lot of stuff that he does. Makes me want to watch Goodfella's for the hundredth time.
It's definitely up there with De Niro's best performances out of the movies that I've seen with him. James Woods is really great in it too. And Joe Pesci has an amusing small part.
Damn, it's been a while since I saw Goodfellas, but I don't even remember De Niro being in it. Just remember Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci. I double-checked the movie's listing on imdb to confirm that he was actually in it. Ray Liotta was memorable since he was the protagonist and Joe Pesci was memorable because he was psycho, but I don't really remember anything about De Niro's character. The entry just basically tells me that he was buddies with the two guys and he did "jobs" with them.
