How are you and yours doing (talk about your kids, family, day job, and life here)?

Anything cool (no need for bitter/lonely jokes/comments or telling us about the origins of the holiday) going on fo Valintine's Day?

What are you reading? How is it?

What other music, shows, movies, or various media are you into? How are they?

What are you writing and/or editing? How is that going?

Why aren't you getting more done with it (in general, not this very second)?

Is that just an excuse?

Really?

Anything you know and want to share with us?

Feel free to ask me a reasonable question(s), I just won't answer my own if you repeat them back or reword them.

Carly Berg's picture
Carly Berg from USA is reading Story Prompts That Work by Carly Berg is now available at Amazon February 3, 2015 - 8:24pm

How are you and yours doing?

My (grown) kids and husband are doing just fine as usual. I can't believe how lucky I got there!

Anything cool going on for Valentine's Day?

I am getting some lovely pink pearls so nothing else matters! I hope for fondue on Valentine's Day. It just seems the thing to have. Either at The Melting Pot restaurant or at home with the two fondue pots I bought years ago and have only used once.

What are you reading? How is it?

I'm still working on my three books of short stories by Jill McCorkle. Well, I've finished one of them. I like her writing because it's kinda everyday but with some humor and deeper messages tucked in and features women my age (fiftyish) which seems hard to find.

What other shows, etc. are you into? How are they?

I don't do much of that. However, I confess to watching Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Dr. Phil, and the Hoarder shows. I know it is sad!

What are you writing and/or editing? How's that going?

I had three book rough drafts lying around, two nonfiction and one fiction, one from twenty years ago! It suddenly dawned on me that I could quickly get three more books done right away if I just went back and cleaned them up, duh. One is done, two to go. I plan to start #2 this week.

Why aren't you getting more done with it?

Well, I finished the first one, then went out of town for a month right afterwards. I just returned yesterday. So, it wasn't on my plan to start it sooner.

Is that just an excuse?

Of course.

Really?

Yes.

Anything you think we should know?

Yes. I have discovered that TCA peels are now available for home use, and bought a bottle of it. I plan to get rid of every freckle all over my face, hands and body. Maybe I'll do the first treatment tomorrow. If I get up the nerve. It's gonna be great. I'll post about it on my blog, with pics. I just know everyone is dying to know all about it!

Feel free to ask me a question...

What three things  in your life are you the most proud of, Mr. Dwayne?

How are you and yours doing (talk about your kids here)?

I have no kids. So I'm doing amazing...all the time...with money to spare...

Anything cool (no need for bitter/lonely jokes/comments or telling us about the origins of the holiday) going on fo Valintine's Day?

Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Perhaps it's by choice.

What are you reading? How is it?

The Moral Landscape by Sam Harris. It's F*&^ing awesome.

What other music, shows, movies, or various media are you into? How are they?

Star Wars: The Clone Wars--It's good background noise.

What are you writing and/or editing? How is that going?

I'm working on my honors thesis for my undergraduate degree. It's holy hell amazingly difficult. I love the process so much.

Why aren't you getting more done with it (in general, not this very second)?

I have three other classes and a bunch of extracurriculars that require many hours reading and writing.

Is that just an excuse?

No.

Really?

Yes.

Anything you think we should know?

My last semester of undergrad. I graduate in may with BS in Philosophy and English with a concentration in writing.

Feel free to ask me a reasonable question, I just won't answer my own if you repeat them back or reword them.

Do you ever feel shame about writing a scene, but understand it's critical for the story?

If yes, what is it and why was it critical?

If no, what scenes do you think cause writers shame?

SConley's picture

How are you and yours doing (talk about your kids here)?

My daughter is hilarious and the best form of entertainment I have.

Anything cool (no need for bitter/lonely jokes/comments or telling us about the origins of the holiday) going on fo Valintine's Day?

No. hopefully I'm heading up to Dallas that weekend to get my tattoo done.

What are you reading? How is it?

Bird Box, which is excellent, and this book for a writing intensive called Wired For Story, which is very informative and interesting.

What other music, shows, movies, or various media are you into? How are they?

Well, Girls and Broad City are back and they're always good. I've been watching Rainn Wilson's new show Backstrom, which is good. I just saw Tokyo Tribe which was amazing of course. I'm watching some Korean movies as well, those are great. The Man From Nowhere currently.

What are you writing and/or editing? How is that going?

Finally about to start on my novel, can't wait.

Why aren't you getting more done with it (in general, not this very second)?

I was waiting for the Francesca Lia Block writing intensive to start.

Is that just an excuse?

Kind of actually.

Really?

Well, no, I could have started on it already, I just kept procrastinating and then the class was offered so I decided to wait for it.

Anything you think we should know?

TOKYO TRIBE

NEVER EVER DIE.

Feel free to ask me a reasonable question, I just won't answer my own if you repeat them back or reword them.

If you could be any bug, what would you be and why?

Dwayne's picture

@Carly Berg - Not your fault, you have no way of knowing that isn't a reasonable thing to expect me to answer.

@Jose F. Diaz -

Do you ever feel shame about writing a scene, but understand it's critical for the story?

I wrote a story called His Present about a father power raping his daughter, that bothered me. I don't know if shame is the right word, but pretty close. It bothered me I could write that.

If yes, what is it and why was it critical?

Well, it was 90% of the story. If you take that out she gets a email and makes a phone called, not much of a point.

If no, what scenes do you think cause writers shame?

A lot of things seemed pointless and like they were just trying to be mean. That would make me ashamed.

@SConley -

If you could be any bug, what would you be and why?

A firefly, they look neat.

How are you and yours doing (talk about your kids here)?

My kids is now a preteen and let's just say karma is a bitch. My mom tried to warn me, but I didn't listen.

Anything cool (no need for bitter/lonely jokes/comments or telling us about the origins of the holiday) going on fo Valintine's Day?

I'm determined to be more romantic this year and am taking the GF to a foreign flick and actually getting her a card from Hallmark.

What are you reading? How is it?

Lots of short stories for school. I'm starting to appreciate the classics more and understanding the context in which stories are written.

What other music, shows, movies, or various media are you into? How are they?

I'm a total dork, I love Downton Abbey and Gotham

What are you writing and/or editing? How is that going?

Ugh, still editing Yes, Admin.

Why aren't you getting more done with it (in general, not this very second)?

Because writing this writing thing is hard. There are so many details and nuances that you have to add. I'd love to say this shit comes natural, but it doesn't. I'm having to work my ass of here.

Is that just an excuse?

Zero excuses here.

Really?

Really.

Anything you think we should know?

Isis is pissing me off. I'm thinking by the number of plane crashes lately that pilots might need a refresher course. I'm totally sick of assholes shielding their hate behind a bible. Here's the solution: if you don't condone gay marriage don't marry someone of the same sex. It's pretty simple.

Feel free to ask me a reasonable question, I just won't answer my own if you repeat them back or reword them.

What did you think of the halftime show?

Redd Tramp's picture

How are you and yours doing (talk about your kids here)?

I'm good. I have coffee. I have no kids, but the kids at my work are doing well. (Elementary School).

Anything cool (no need for bitter/lonely jokes/comments or telling us about the origins of the holiday) going on fo Valintine's Day?

No. :(

What are you reading? How is it?

I'm currently rereading Lullaby by Palahniuk. One of my favorite books. When I get paid I'm going to have a field-day ordering books on Amazon.

What other music, shows, movies, or various media are you into? How are they?

I'm still very, very into Shameless. And that's about it. But that show, man. I love that show. Other than that, just been revisiting some music I used to be more into, like Enuff Z'Nuff, Skid Row, LA Guns, stuff like that.

What are you writing and/or editing? How is that going?

Editing some stuff for some people on here, and working on expanding the story I wrote for Richard's class. Going well. Slowly but surely.

Why aren't you getting more done with it (in general, not this very second)?

Cause I'm a butthead. I let my feelings of inadequacy cloud my oh-so logical brain.

Is that just an excuse?

You know it.

Really?

Mhmm :)

Anything you think we should know?

Coffee saves lives. Other people's, not my own. It saves me from crankiness. Crankyness? How is that spelled...?

Feel free to ask me a reasonable question, I just won't answer my own if you repeat them back or reword them.

Hey Dwayne, I wondered, what kind of stuff do you like to write? Not genre-wise, but what are ideas or themes or dynamics you find yourself revisiting/what interests you the most right now?

@Redd Tramp

Hey Dwayne, I wondered, what kind of stuff do you like to write?

Stuff that seems to flow.

Not genre-wise, but what are ideas or themes or dynamics you find yourself revisiting/what interests you the most right now?

I have no idea.  I write a lot of super hero stories. I do memiors. Few issues I write about a lot, but that was because they kept coming up in real life.

How are you and yours doing (talk about your kids here)?
I'm fine and dandy. Eldest is in love with the arcade console I got her yesterday and is trying to get to the end of Pac-Man just for the glitch. The middle one is tired and ready for the school holidays. And the youngest is busy watching Bill Nye and shouting about volcanoes. The other half is at work, walking through the countryside, possibly sharpening sticks or something.

Anything cool (no need for bitter/lonely jokes/comments or telling us about the origins of the holiday) going on fo Valintine's Day?
That'll be my chap's birthday. We're off to see 36 Crazyfists the evening before. No idea what we're doing on the day yet.

what are you reading? How is it?

Haunted is the current bus ride book. The knife drawer has been started but too soon for any judgment.

What other music, shows, movies, or various media are you into? How are they?
Part way through Life is Strange on my PS3. That seems pretty good, the rewind function isn't brilliant, guessing that will come into its own during future episodes. It's the story I'm interested in. Don't really do tv, I have been watching the latest Gold Rush. Movie wise - making my way through the award nominees.

What are you writing and/or editing? How is that going?
Only one short out at the moment. Writing a short story called Marriage is Hell. Edits on two other shorts. In final stages of the long, frustrating process which is putting together an anthology. (Edit - of other people's short stories. I haven't written enough shorts to fill an anthology yet.)

Why aren't you getting more done with it (in general, not this very second)?
I am balancing starting up a new business, 3 kids, finding time to see my man... Quite frankly, I'm doing plenty :)

Is that just an excuse?

Really?
There are no excuses. I quit my writing group so I'd have more time to write.

Anything you think we should know?
Erm... Random fact I was told last week. High heels were first invented to make men look more masculine. I haven't looked up whether that is accurate, but it makes sense.

Feel free to ask me a reasonable question, I just won't answer my own if you repeat them back or reword them.

Sorry, should have expanded on that, got sidetracked.Do you listen to music whilst writing? And if so, does the genre and mood of writing alter which music you put on.

We are good and always busy! -almost- 7 year old son wants to be a pilot. I'm trying to teach him! HA! Husband is signing up for USAF reserves. YIKES! I'm trying to enroll in college for the first time. (double YIKES) to study aeronautical sciences...

Anything cool (no need for bitter/lonely jokes/comments or telling us about the origins of the holiday) going on fo Valintine's Day?

I doubt it!

What are you reading? How is it?

Just finished "Shooting Kabul" to my son. The idea was interesting. (Junior book)

What other music, shows, movies, or various media are you into? How are they?

I like to read the news and study aviation. Not really media. It's fine.

What are you writing and/or editing? How is that going?

finihing my first novel. It's probably junk, but hey, it's almost finished.

Why aren't you getting more done with it (in general, not this very second)?

I'm buy home-schooling my son, running my parent's farm, and trying to become a pilot... among other things.

Is that just an excuse?

Unfortunately, no.

Really?

I wish it were an excuse, can I change my anwer?

Anything you think we should know?

The purpose of life. Shouldn't we all know that?

@Christina Daumer -

Do you prefer living in reality or lost in a book/movie/etc.?

II guess it depends on the day. I like to get lost in something that helps me see the world a little clearer, so it feels at least somewhat productive to me.

@Thuggish -

Okay... what's your go-to escape from life in general?

Reading if I'm being lazy, new experiences if I'm being ambitious.
