Want to win a copy of Paperbacks From Hell (which has a few highlights, but otherwise in great shape)? All you gotta do is enter.

The Contest: Write a short story. And by short, I mean short. 200 words maximum.

The Story: Your story must take place on Friday the 13th and feature an element of very bad luck. Do with that what you will.

Other Boring Stuff:

-Entries must be posted by 9 AM Friday April 13th.
-Entries will be judged by a neutral-ish 3rd party.
-I do this out of the kindness of my heart and wallet, so if you're outside the United States, I'd appreciate if you'd accept a digital version of the book I could send you in lieu of the physical prize (international shipping is KILLER).

Ready, set, write!

Aw man, this is so cool! Mini-writing contests with cool books as the prize? Keep doing this! There should be way more entries. Here's mine:

Camp Craft Awake 2

Emma bit her lip as Evan continued sharing his theory on why everyone always wanted to hear how he escaped the murders on the lake so many summers ago.

“The true horror came at the end. When there was a crazy counselor with killer craft projects, we - the campers - had purpose. Figure out the knot, remember how to orient a map, secure the bandages, defeat the monster. But when it was over? The real challenge began. Us survivors? Who were we? What do we do now? Were we good people? It was easy to have direction and do the right thing when we were being chased by some Friday the 13th inspired slasher. But what do you do when your assailant is the mundanity of existence that chases all of us?”

“Friday the 13th. That’s today,” Emma said, noting that someone had removed all of the oars between her and the door. “Let’s go back to the campfire before all the beer runs out.”

“Yes, run out,” Evan said, as he opened and shut and opened his pocket knife, “Just… I wanted you to know that I’ve found purpose in giving purpose to others.”
