Hi all, I'm after a name for a character in my novel. The character is male, and will appear in four, maybe five chapters. He needs a first and last name, and so I'd like to name him after someone real.

As I started writing a novel after being inspired by this site, I thought it would be a nice touch to name a character after someone on here. So, anyone willing to lend me their name?

Depends on the character. If it's some pedophile preist, then no - but if it's someone redeeming, like a serial killer or villain, then sure.

It's an old rich guy the protagonists are going to con some money out of. He's a shrewd businessman from a wealthy heritage, hence their plan has to be really good to get away with it. Which it won't be. He's lonely, tired, used to carrying the family reputation, looking for a different excitement as all he's known is business. He's never married, much to the disappointment of his late parents. He's also much better written than that fairly obvious cliché I just used to describe him, but you get the idea. He represents the antagonist within a lengthy sub-plot.

Well, while I was growing up, I had my stepdad's last name, so I was once David L. Lowden. Now, however, I've dropped it and returned to my mother's family name, so I don't mind if you use that old one. There are a few David Lowdens in the business world, so it seems to work for them.

David Lowden, not bad! Thanks Photon. Any other offers?

That's quite good, is it yours? What's your first name, if you don't mind me asking?

I'm going to stab the dark and say it's Amber.

I was thinking that, but didn't want to presume. Also, with all the legal implications of names in fiction, I want to ensure I am using a genuine name and have some form of written consent, just in case.

Hehe, yes, and yes ;)

You won't want my first name for a male character though ;)

You inspired me to google it, my name is a town!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Partington

EDIT: actually, you may not want to use it, it's been done

So it is. I've been there, I should have remembered, really.

So the current names I have been kindly donated are:

  • David Lowden
  • [Amber] Partington
  • Dakota Taylor
  • Sheldon Turnipseed (although I'm pretty sure this has come up before, Renfield...)

All are greatly appreciated, and if I do use your name I'll send you a message with a paragraph mentioning the character, so you get a feel of what you've let yourself in for.

Any other suggestions?

My name is Jeremy Light. Use it for the most attractive, most amazing, ballsiest character you write. :)

Haha, thanks but the character is now named. In the end I used a different name for him, but his lawyer has been called Mr Partington-Taylor, in reference to those above.

EDIT: Oh, whoops, didn't see that post under Jeremy's for some reason. Guess I shouldn't forumize with these shades on.
