I read that Nin wrote about June Miller in tons of her books but I can't seem figure out which ones they are...anyone know which of Nin's books have some June in them? For instance, which characters or book titles are about June?
Every book written since then has been about June Miller.
Henry & June, to start. It's an entire chronicle of her relationship with the pair; it's heavy on her feelings for Henry and light on June, but then again, June was out of the country. I'm not sure that I've read another Nin book that references June, though. Weren't the rest of her novels just plain erotic fiction? Henry & June is excerpts of her diary.
I didn't know there was a film; I'll have to look into that. I'm not sure that I've ever read anything about her in any of Nin's other novels, but there might be other volumes of her diary that were published that I missed. I'll do some research and post it here.
What I've found so far:
According to Wikipedia, journals of hers were published as three separate books. The first deals only with the years up to 1927, but she didn't meet June until 1931, if I remember correctly. The second book covers 1931 all the way up to 1966, so it's highly likely that she covers details of June both during and after the time covered in Henry & June.
The thing is, a lot of her diaries were edited to remove details of her sex life to protect her husband and Henry, so the second book might not even have those details. You could possibly find a version of it that hasn't been edited, but I've always been under the impression that Henry & June was that version. Don't take me on my word, though, I'd keep looking.
just because i love that picture.
also, there's a book of letters between Henry and Anais - A Literate Passion: Letters of Anais Nin and Henry Miller. and some of her diaries are now available in the 'unexpurgerated' version. i have no idea if if i spelled that word correctly. i doubt it. anyway, with no parts cut out.
Henry and June and Diary 1 (1931-1934) are the best sources of Nin's writing on June, although June is mentioned in every diary which appeared afterwards. Nin used June as inspiration for the fictional character Sabina, who appears in nearly every one of Nin's novels, including House of Incest and the novels which comprise Cities of the Interior, most notably Ladders to Fire, Children of the Albatross, and A Spy in the House of Love.
Just wanted to add Incest to the list of books where June is discussed--it covers when she reappeared in Paris and things between Henry, June, and Anais blew up for good.
