Are you alive? Yeppers.

Mother’s day is coming up.  Thoughts?  Stories?  Just say something interesting. The other day I talked to my mother and she reminded me to tell her happy birthday. It was a really shameful turn in the conversation, so I hung up on her. Not really that last part. Fuck if I'll remember Mother's Day.

Do you consider yourself a sore loser? I consider myself a regular loser.

What’s the last book you read?  Was it good? House of Leaves. It was good, like 30% filler though.

What animal makes you smile? An otter.

What’s your favorite TV re-run. Magnum P.I.

What are your marketable skills? Precariously wielding a shovel, placing goop on electrodes, sniffing solder flux, other stuff I'll never use.

What is the nicest thing a friend has ever done for you? Treated me to Red Lobster.

What is your favorite lie that you have ever told? My whole life is lie.

What do you do when you can’t sleep? Booze.

Are you alive?
INDEED I AM, THANK YOU FOR ASKING.

Mother’s day is coming up.  Thoughts?  Stories?  Just say something interesting.
I really hope everyone who has me as a mother makes me an awesome painting out of rocks glued to construction paper. In the shape of an elephant with five legs.

Do you consider yourself a sore loser?
I do lose a lot of things, and my back is rather stiff, so I guess more or less, yes.

What’s the last book you read?  Was it good?
I'm just about to finish Broken Piano For President, and don't tell me if I'm wrong and the end is so disappointing that it erases all the goodness of the first 7/8, but I'm gonna go ahead and say "yes. it was good"

What animal makes you smile?
This one:

What’s your favorite TV re-run.
M*A*S*H, I think i've been watching reruns for 20 years straight, but it's still good.

What are your marketable skills?
I'm cheap and available.

What is the nicest thing a friend has ever done for you?
I have too many nice friends to pick a nicest thing... but most recently Jessica set up a new I'M ALIVE!!! thread after my balking.

What is your favorite lie that you have ever told?
"Chicago style pizza means they bake it UPSIDE DOWN." The best is that someone actually believed that. For a year.

What do you do when you can’t sleep?
Panic, thrash around a lot, listen to Marvin Gaye, draw creepy things, pee.

Are you alive? - I wish I wasn't right now. Because shoulder pain.

Mother’s day is coming up.  Thoughts?  Stories?  Just say something interesting. - Shouldn't "day" be capitalized in that sentence? Because Mother's Day is an official kind of day, right?

Do you consider yourself a sore loser? - Depends on what I'm losing.

What’s the last book you read? Was it good? - I think it was Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn. It was good, but it's bad that I can't be sure if it was the actual last book I read...

What animal makes you smile? - Buffalo. They're so massive and dangerous but they were almost endangered once. That's hilarous.

What’s your favorite TV re-run? - Why have a favourite TV rerun when there's the Internet?

What are your marketable skills? - Marketing!

What is the nicest thing a friend has ever done for you? - Bought me lunch when both my debit card and credit card were being declined (through no fault of my own!).

What is your favorite lie that you have ever told? - It's one of the answers to one of these questions.

What do you do when you can’t sleep? - I usually read, and then if I still can't sleep I have an anxiety attack.

1) Are you alive?

I'm actually trapped in Schrödinger's box, so you'll have to figure that one out on your own.

2) Mother’s day is coming up.  Thoughts?  Stories?  Just say something interesting.

Okay.

3) Do you consider yourself a sore loser?

I honestly don't think I've ever been offended by anything, ever, so I suppose not.

4) What’s the last book you read?  Was it good?

I've been reading through Lovecraft's stuff, and yes, he was an incredibly talented writer, though a little racist, which is unfortunate.

5) What animal makes you smile?

Chimpanzees, but for some reason, they always attack me when I smile at them.

6) What’s your favorite TV re-run?

I actually don't have regular television; I mainly watch Netflix, and I rarely watch the same thing twice. I am watching The West Wing for the second time through, and I am enjoying it again, so I guess that counts.

7) What are your marketable skills?

If I told you, I'd have to kill you. Wait, did I just give it away?

8) What is the nicest thing a friend has ever done for you?

She agreed to date me for the past six years running.

9) What is your favorite lie that you have ever told?

That I am a terrible liar.

10) What do you do when you can’t sleep?

Stay awake, mostly. There really isn't anything I've found that can easily put me to sleep when I'm dealing with insomnia.

  2. Mother’s day is coming up.  Thoughts?  Stories?  Just say something interesting.  I'll probably buy her some booze. Not because she drinks a lot; rather because she has a bunch of non-consumable crap already.
  3. Do you consider yourself a sore loser?  No. Cuz I never lose.
  4. What’s the last book you read?  Was it good?  Point Omega by Don Delilloliolio. It was "okay."
  5. What animal makes you smile?  Sloths. Small monkeys. Mantis shrimp. Many more.
  6. What’s your favorite TV re-run.  AFV, biotech. It was youtube before youtube. Speaking of which, I just went and got a cheesesteak and they had an old bass-fishing themed pinball machine in there, and I was like, Man, next time I hear someone say something about "steampunk" I'm going to tell them to STFU and play some goddam pinball. "Steampunk" video games? Pinball, biotech.
  7. What are your marketable skills?  All of them.
  8. What is the nicest thing a friend has ever done for you?  Bought me a lottery ticket. It was the thought which counted, that is to say it could've been worth millions of dollars.
  9. What is your favorite lie that you have ever told?  The one with the thing.
  10. What do you do when you can’t sleep?  Sleep harder.

Mother’s day is coming up.  Thoughts?  Stories?  Just say something interesting. Every day is Mother's Day here at the Bate's Motel.
Do you consider yourself a sore loser? No, because I never lose.
What’s the last book you read?  Was it good? High Fidelity and it was great. BUT, somehow the ending disappointed me.
What animal makes you smile? Lemurs! Manatees! Shar Peis! My cat being retarded.
What’s your favorite TV re-run. I love me some Magnum P.I. too.
What are your marketable skills? I'm an amazing parallel parker. Also, Human Resources, contract negotiations, job site safe analysis, and I don't gag when I brush my teeth.
What is the nicest thing a friend has ever done for you? Oh man. Where to start? Two friends have made me actual books (about me! - wtf?!)
What is your favorite lie that you have ever told? When I got busted with weed at 14, I feigned ignorance and said it was supposed to be catnip and the person who gave it to me must have given me the wrong stuff. I got it back. And then lied and said I got a "refund" from the person who "mixed them up."
What do you do when you can’t sleep? I take ativan. I'm up to about 3 a year, but it's been a rough few years.

Mother’s day is coming up.  Thoughts?  Stories?  Just say something interesting. I asked for the Tarantino Blu-Ray box set for Mother's Day. I really hope that's what I get :D

Do you consider yourself a sore loser? I hate to lose, but I realize how silly it is to be emotional over it. So I check a lot of that, and vent my petty crap to the HusBANG where my asshole attitude doesn't have to affect anyone else.

What’s the last book you read?  Was it good? Last book I finished was an ARC of Mr. Tietz's GOOD SEX, GREAT PRAYERS, and yeah, it was REALLY GOOD. Like REALLY. I am having an emotional affair with it. Currently reading JUNKIE LOVE by Joe Clifford, also really good in a totally different way.

What animal makes you smile? Rockhopper penguins:

What’s your favorite TV re-run. We've been watching Raising Hope on Netflix, it's pretty funny and extremely cute.

What are your marketable skills? Uhhmmm. I had no idea this question was going to be on the test. I didn't study... Marketable skills? Shit. Well I am a really great adminstrative assistant type person, I did some time as a professional baker, I am a trained doula. I have manegerial experience both in a restaurant and office setting... I'm a quick learner. I'm also very good with people. My favorite job was as a physical therapy technician, because I got to meet/talk to so many interesting people.

What is the nicest thing a friend has ever done for you? Oh, jeez. I don't know if I can narrow this down. You guys... I have the most awesome friends in the world. Most recently, my friend surprised me with an awesome "Marvel For Her" Iron Man sweatshirt. But my friends so amazing, awesome, super cool shit for me all the time. I try really hard to repay it.

What is your favorite lie that you have ever told? I tell my daughter that she never has to be afraid because our dog eats "bad things".

  1. Are you alive? Pretty much.
  2. Mother’s day is coming up.  Thoughts?  Stories?  Just say something interesting. The stories I receive most praise for are about my mom.
  3. Do you consider yourself a sore loser? Yes, absolutely. I refuse to let others win. (Boyfriend said: "Cite Monopoly, please." I fucking hate losing at Monopoly more than anything in the entire world.)
  4. What’s the last book you read?  Was it good? I just reread Feed, yes, it was good.
  5. What animal makes you smile? Cows. And cats. And dogs. All of them.
  6. What’s your favorite TV re-run? Law & Order.
  7. What are your marketable skills? I know a lot of schtuff.
  8. What is the nicest thing a friend has ever done for you? My boyfriend texted my mom telling her to bring me comfort food when I was having a terrible day. It was just a really simple, kind gesture and I love him for it.
  9. What is your favorite lie that you have ever told? "Oh, yeah, I came."
  10. What do you do when you can’t sleep? Take a Klonopin/Benadryl and go the fuck to sleep. Or stay up all night and write.

1.Are you alive? Debatable. I'm having issues with insomnia and feels like I have a cold coming on.
2.Mother’s day is coming up.  Thoughts?  Stories?  Just say something interesting. It won't arrive here in the UK for another 10 months.
3.Do you consider yourself a sore loser? Depends. At love? Yes. At games/contests, no. I've had a lot of practise losing at both.
4.What’s the last book you read?  Was it good? Fragile Things by Neil Gaiman, again. Always good!
5.What animal makes you smile? Humans.
6.What’s your favorite TV re-run. The West Wing.
7.What are your marketable skills? Answering survey questions.

8.What is the nicest thing a friend has ever done for you? I'm lucky with my friends. I have the kind that you can ring up in the middle of the night who will immediately be happy to talk things through, or even meet up (this has happened).
9.What is your favorite lie that you have ever told? I don't have a favourite. I lie a lot. Mostly it's outlandish stuff meant as a joke. Occasionally it's to disguise my true feelings. I don't lie maliciously, and I try never ever to lie to myself. That one's difficult to do though.
10.What do you do when you can’t sleep? Depends how long it's been going on for. After a few weeks I can quite happily just lie there keeping my mind relatively blank. I'm just over a week into a bout, so I'm at the stage where I get frustrated easily. I'll give up on sleep and either watch some TV (sport is pretty good as it doesn't involve much thought) or listen to some music.

Do you consider yourself a sore loser? Not really. I'm fairly mellow.
What’s the last book you read?  Was it good? All the Beautiful Sinners by Stephen Graham Jones, and it was the best book I've read in years. Going to pick up Demon Theory at the library tonight.
What animal makes you smile? Turtles and bunnies.
What’s your favorite TV re-run. Jonathan Creek. I don't have TV, but I went and bought the UK boxed DVD set and hacked my DVD player so I can watch them.
What are your marketable skills? Editing. And I was a librarian for a while, so that.
What is the nicest thing a friend has ever done for you? One of my online knitting groups got together and had secret craft auctions to raise money for my son's surgery last year. It was amazing. I still cry about it.
What is your favorite lie that you have ever told? The monsters can't get you because I ate them all.

@SRead - Demon Theory is amazing! It is the most impressive and informed horror novel I've ever read. If you're a horror nerd like me, you will love the footnotes. And if not, you'll learn more than you ever wanted to know about the horror genre.

Renfield's picture
Renfield from Hell is reading 20th Century Ghosts May 2, 2013 - 9:01am

Having just read a few footnoted fictions myself, I have to say DEMON THEORY's footnotes actually had good/amusing info that enriched the text, whereas HoL nearly all the non-other-narrator footnotes were nonsense. I might say I liked the footnotes in DT better than the story proper, probably only because it took me half the book to dial in on the voice. ALL THE BEATIFUL SINNERS I really loved, I guess the Dzanc E-Book of it is a different edit of the book.

SRead's picture
SRead from Colorado is reading Stories May 2, 2013 - 9:20am

@sean and Ren: I can't wait to go pick it up. I had to order it through interlibrary loan to be delivered to a library in another town to get the hard copy. Online reviews said the footnote structure doesn't work well in ebook form, so I'm driving an hour to go get it, haha.
SGJ's voice turns me inside out. It is exactly the voice of my nightmares, when I have them--that stream of consciousness with a bit of time stutter where you somehow know things you were never told. I dunno. I've read his short fiction before, but reading AtBS was like being in a coma and having an extended nightmare, like it was an interactive experience. I can't wait for more.

Strange Photon's picture
Strange Photon from Fort Wayne, IN is reading Laurie Anderson lyrics May 2, 2013 - 10:11am

Are you alive? Undeservingly so.

Mother’s day is coming up.  Thoughts?  Stories?  Just say something interesting. My mom was in a group of prospective astronauts that included the eventual first female astronaut, Sally Ride, when she got pregnant with me. When I was born with all the serious medical issues, her prospect of rejoining the program pretty much fell apart. I make Mother's Day a huge deal whenever I can, because I will always be the reason her life's dreams were never realized.

Do you consider yourself a sore loser? Kind of, but not toward the person(s) who were the victors. I just get really mad at myself for not being good enough at whatever the contest was.

What’s the last book you read?  Was it good? Reread Cormac McCarthy's Child of God. It is always a wonderful book, as are everything else he's written - though Suttree is difficult for me to chew.

What animal makes you smile? Pretty much all of them except for people. I welcome people-hunting season.

What’s your favorite TV re-run. Not sure what to do here, since this isn't a question. If you're actually asking, my answer would be The X-Files. I've lusted after Scully for 20 years now.

What are your marketable skills? Wilderness survival and behavioral counseling are my two greatest 'career' strengths, but if I ever want to give up my kooshy life, my beautiful woman, and my adorable cat for a life in the shadows of crime, I'm sure I could easily make a case for my skills as a hitman.

What is the nicest thing a friend has ever done for you? When I ran away with my dog as a 14 year old because my stepfather tried to give her away against my will, my friend harbored me in his walk-in closet for a week. He brought us food and water, and lied to my folks and his mom. Eventually we were caught, but it wasn't because of him. The same friend MANY years later stole my painkillers, which forced me into excrutiating withdrawal, thus ending our friendship and inscribing his name in permanent marker on my list of people who get gutted first when I eventually snap. But the dog thing was really nice.

What is your favorite lie that you have ever told? I used to make up different reasons for why my hands look the way they do. Some of my faves are: mountain biking accident that ripped off my thumbs and crushed my right arm; car accident where I went through the windshield and my hands got stuck in the engine; escaped lion at a zoo. Other than those, I'm not one who enjoys lying. I loathe being lied to, and since I would likely want to do serious bodily harm to anyone who lies, I try not to do it myself.

What do you do when you can’t sleep? Wake up my woman for a nice round of late-night... exercise. That, or plot world domination. Either, or. I used to chat with one of my cousins late at night sometimes, because he always had insomnia too, but he kinda got rid of social media stuff and internet a little while back so I was just left talking to my cat. I wish I was a drinker. I've heard that is really helpful.

What are your marketable skills? I can type really fast, and I spent 10 years working with computer software, so there's that.
What is the nicest thing a friend has ever done for you? This is a great memory. Senior year of high school, one of my best girlfriends lived with my family, as her parents had moved to Scranton, PA. We lived in separate rooms at the end of a hallway. The rooms were connected by a shared closet. One night, she had a boy over, a mutual friend and sometimes friend-with-benefits for both of us. They were in her room, I was in mine. I was boo-hooing over a boy who'd broken my heart, and suddenly, my friend and her boy came crashing through the closet. They tackled me, tickled me, told me how much they loved me, and made me laugh until it seemed like I'd never be sad again. I still smile when I think of that moment.
What is your favorite lie that you have ever told? When the kiddo was small, we had her convinced that at night, the sun set because giant monkeys ate it...and in the morning they pooped it out. The idea was my husband's, but I did my share of perpetuating it.
What do you do when you can’t sleep? Take an Ativan. Seriously, had a terrible bout of insomnia last summer and spent about four days without ANY sleep...now I always have Ativan in the house. That sucked.

Are you alive?

I've written 5000 words this afternoon when I sat down to see if a little idea would even get me 500 before I gave up....HELL I feel alive, but tired...and now I'm wondering how much of that output is complete crap, the way I always do.

Mother’s day is coming up.  Thoughts?  Stories?  Just say something interesting.

Don't scare me like that! We've had it in England already, and there was I trying to convince myself I didn't forget it before I remembered I bought gave her a bottle of booze and a card.

Do you consider yourself a sore loser?

Depends on how badly I wanted the prize.

What’s the last book you read?  Was it good?

I'm almost at the end of Hamilton's Neutronium Alchemist. It's good but it's the mother of all doorstoppers and I'm getting tired of still seeing it on my desk every day. And the final book in that series is the same length AGAIN.

What animal makes you smile?

Otters.

What’s your favorite TV re-run.

I honestly don't watch TV. I'm not in the anti-TV brigade or anything, I just don't make time for it at the moment and haven't for about a year.

What are your marketable skills?

I've been applying for new jobs recently and there's nothing I want to do less than talk about the skills that sell me YET AGAIN.

What is the nicest thing a friend has ever done for you?

A couple of years ago one of my friends made me the most fucking incredible chocolate cake for my birthday, totally unexpected. Not sure if that's the nicest thing ever but it's the one that comes to mind and I can't sit here all night replaying my life until I find a nicer thing.

What is your favorite lie that you have ever told?

When someone at work asked me where I got my coat from, I decided to tell her that the fake fur lining inside it was real and that the brown suade leather was bear skin. She didn't believe me, so I had to do some convincing. Before I knew what I was doing I launched into this bullshit story about how the fur came from a bear in Arizona (where I''ve genuinely been) and how I shot it myself after a day's tracking with a ranger I paid to teach me how to do it. I then talked her through how I skinned the animal with a whole range of different knives and then took the skin to a specialist shop that turned it into the coat. Icing on the cake, I told her I had to smuggle it back through customs and I was shitting myself when they checked my bag and somehow didn't see it.

Tell me there's no way she bought all that, but I know she did, because of how she cursed me out for making her so gullible a week later when she saw the 'River Island' designer lable on the inside of the coat as I was hanging it up.

What do you do when you can’t sleep?

Are you alive?  yes
Mother’s day is coming up.  Thoughts?  Stories?  Just say something interesting.  Burt Brandstad once ate three bags of Cool Ranch Doritos in one sitting. It made his stomach feel very depressed, and later his cat shit in his mouth in hopes of freshening his breath.
Do you consider yourself a sore loser?  No, but the winners always do. Stupid sore winners.
What’s the last book you read?  Was it good?  Low Down Death Right Easy. It was very good, remember? We ALL talked about it extensively in the book club selection thread.
What animal makes you smile? Polar bears. And the bulls in Spain when they spear humans.
What’s your favorite TV re-run? Either Saved By the Bell or Ninja Detective.
What are your marketable skills? Apparently nothing but pushing carts at K-Mart. I also have more than enough cynicism for the entire room and can often drink large amounts of beer without getting drunk. I'm an expensive date.
What is the nicest thing a friend has ever done for you? fucked my ex-girlfriend (which in turn helped me to lose the house "we" had just bought, even though I kept trying to pay the mortgage (which in turn ran up a huge debt because I couldn't pay other bills so opted to use a credit card to keep the electricity on (which in turn caused me to have my car temporarily repo'ed (which in turn taught me all about panic attacks))) which ruined my credit to the point that I apparently can't even open a checking account) because without that I wouldn't be where I am today :)
What is your favorite lie that you have ever told? I'm fine, really...
What do you do when you can’t sleep?  Thrash around like I am on fire as I steal all of the covers.

Are you alive? Yes.

Mother’s day is coming up.  Thoughts?  Hope she is okay.

Stories?  No good ones come to mind.

Just say something interesting. something interesting.

Do you consider yourself a sore loser? I'd have to lose to know.

What’s the last book you read? 'Phoenix,' An Amazon Kindle Single By Chuck Palahniuk, but that isn't really a book.

Was it good?  It was morally neutral.

What animal makes you smile? My dog.

What’s your favorite TV re-run. Supernatural.

What are your marketable skills? Mainly customer service; I don't mind talking to people who others seem to hate.

What is the nicest thing a friend has ever done for you? Got me a job, place to live, paid my way until my first pay check, and drove me there until I could afford a car.

What is your favorite lie that you have ever told? I love you.

What do you do when you can’t sleep? Not really something that happens to me, I read and doze off in a few moments.

Here's mine...

1. Are you alive?  Thankfully, yes.
2. Mother’s day is coming up.  Thoughts?  Stories?  Just say something interesting.  I made myself breakfast one year for Mother's Day.  That was pretty sweet.
3. Do you consider yourself a sore loser?  Yes.  but only in the way where I hate myself intensely for failing.
4. What’s the last book you read?  Was it good?  I don't know.  This is somewhat concerning.
5. What animal makes you smile?  Chris Carter's dog.
6. What’s your favorite TV re-run.  30 Rock
7. What are your marketable skills?  I'm a fast learner.
8. What is the nicest thing a friend has ever done for you?  Last summer I went through a mildly ugly divorce and I actually had a lot of friends do a lot of very nice things for me from buying me and my son dinner, to getting me out of the house, to  a whole slew of other things just designed to be kind to me and let me know I was loved.  I have a lot of happy memories of that time.
9. What is your favorite lie that you have ever told?  It's just allergies
10. What do you do when you can’t sleep?  Hate everything.

5. What animal makes you smile?  Chris Carter's dog.

The Shar Pei right?! I know!! I even voted for that dog in a contest. He looks so much like my old dog (RIP, Bert)

Yesterday I texted a friend that I wanted to stab myself with a Sharpie and auto-correct changed it to Shar Pei - it sent me into a dog-missing tailspin.

YES!!!!!

Best dog I've seen in a long time.  I want to kidnap him.  Or at the very least, find one just like it.

1. Are you alive?   Yes, in hell. Bahahaha.

2. Mother’s day is coming up.  Thoughts?  Stories?  Just say something interesting.  Well, I had a dream recently featuring my mother as a beautiful young woman.  She never said a word. It was as if she had just found something extremely amusing and needed a moment to gather herself. It was unprecedented. Did you find that interesting?
3. Do you consider yourself a sore loser? You can't lose what yah never had!  But yes. Hell yes.
4. What’s the last book you read?  Was it good?
"Wolfhound Century" by Peter Higgins. It was like discovering a new country-- Russia. There was a character based on the young Lenin for example. But he didn't stop there. There were giants, paranormal freaks,  alternate realites threatening at any moment to go Vesuvius. He even threw in a fairly soulful love story.  I was both enchanted and a little jealous that someone could be that original.
5. What animal makes you smile? I love dogs and they love me.
6. What’s your favorite TV re-run. I keep looking for it on NetFlix but so far no soap.  "Then Came Bronson". Come on you nostalgia mavens, bring it on!
7. What are your marketable skills? I know the tradesman's secret way of opening CD jewel cases.
8. What is the nicest thing a friend has ever done for you? Once in my college days I drove a bunch of buddies to the Winter Carnival up in the great white north, Quebec, ate more than my fair share of pot brownies and promptly got lost, but good. I was so grateful, when I finally did get my bearings, 2 days later,  that they had had the good sense to hole up in the nearby tavern and wait around till I remembered where I parked.
9. What is your favorite lie that you have ever told? It's good. Yeah this special dish you made, for this special special occasion, it's really tasty.
10. What do you do when you can’t sleep?  I vow never again to eat sauerkraut and knockwurst so late.

Thank you for this, Courtney, laughed my ass off. I really needed that.

Not sure what to do here, since this isn't a question. If you're actually asking, my answer would be The X-Files. I've lusted after Scully for 20 years now.

I love you/you're welcome.

I hope you mean SVU otherwise you're dead to me.

Same with Chuck Klosterman, though I think maybe I would love both.

But... but we're so good together! I have to watch the original. Jack McCoy is my soul mate, and Sam Waterston is my favorite actor. Don't leave me, Ren. </3

Also, I read Downtown Owl by Chuck Klosterman and bawled my heart out when I was seventeen and in the hotel after the house fire I constantly mention. Broke my fucking heart. I think you'd like it.
