Bah, another thread that disintegrated as I read farther through it. 

I was perked up by mention of "What Technology Wants" and that leads naturally to "The Lights in the Tunnel" which does not immediately go where you would think it would. Then there was the thing, written by uh, whatshisface, Bear, Greg Bear "Darwin's Radio" about the sudden onset of evolution to counter stresses and strains of 21st century mankind, old news, but post homo sapien for sure.
