I'm curiuos how everyone around here found this site to begin with.
My story is that I was googling what death smelled like, and found an old thread that was really good and helpful, next thing i know i'm poking around and eventually signing right up.
What about you?
Neil Gaiman's twitter, on the ramp up to opening day here at LitReactor.
The Cult, Chuck Palahniuk's fansite. Been on there since around 2000, and then they decided to branch the writing-focused stuff over to here, with the workshops and whatnot, and leave the Cult primarily for Chuckstuff. Been here since the beta testing phase (still over there, too). And yes, there was a huge influx of Gaiman fans when he mentioned LR.
I had liked Chuck Palahniuk's page on Facebook and he/whoever runs his page/ was always posting articles. I didn't pay them too much attention until I saw they were hosting Scare Us( a horror writing challenge) I participated in that. Then I started reading the columns, participating in ththreads and joining the workshop.
To be fair, I am also a Chuck P. fan, I just never got into the forums on his site. I had no idea what I was missing, apparently.
I saw Gaiman's tweet, too.
I joined The Cult in 2010 and participated in the workshop there. I also took a couple classes and really enjoyed the experience. The rest is history...or migration.
Chuck's Twitter feed. Take that, Franzen.
A film writer retweeted something about Teleport Us, and I randomly clicked on the link.
I was part of the Cult workshop although I never actually got to submit or post a critique over there. I was just finishing up Chuck's essays when it moved over here :)
I was in the Cult workshop, though under a different screen name.
Perhaps some old Cultists can help me remember the author who led me to the Cult (I don't remember the writer's name). I think I read a book review in the NYT about a novel about (and I could totally be misremembering this) a man searching for his (or someone's) baby crib? It was a very bizarre premise.
The article mentioned that the author had studied online, including at the Cult. Does anyone remember a writer from there having a novel reviewed at the NYT? Does this ring any bells for anyone?
Found out about the site through an old college buddy on Facebook. Read his stuff, took some of his advice and joined.
Hadn't written a word in ten years.
Chuckpalahniuk.net. I used to be a huge fan of Chuck's (of course, I still like his work), and I visited his site often. I never really joined "The Cult." I lurked there for a while and lurked here for a while until I decided to take my writing seriously again, learn some things, and make some new friends.
I was a member of The Cult, way back when it started. I conducted a couple of interviews for that site (Andrew Vachss, Amy Hempel, Christa Faust, William Lashner, SGJ), so when LitReactor was gearing up, the editors asked me if I wanted to write stuff here.
I agreed, then kept on taking on more work until finally they had no choice but to give me a permanent spot on the staff. Now I run the workshop program. This is one of the best fucking jobs I've ever had. Writing is such a solitary goddamn thing and its community that elevates us.
I had just finished my first book ( it is terrible and unpublished) and I was looking for a place to help me with reviews and edits. The workshop here came up in a Google search. It was invaluable and helped my writing enormously. And I stick around for the people. ;)
I was looking up Chuck Palahniuk after seeing the movie on HBO and then reading the book; also saw a reference to the site in an unrelated article on snark online somewhere in the comments section. Besides the writing you guys are doing, I've also appreciated the books you guys mention; I've really expanded the scope of my 'to read' list.
Chuck's Facebook page. I had been clicking through to a lot of articles, so I decided I should officially check it out.
A friend of mine told me about TeleportUs. It looked like fun so I put something up. I had such a good time with it that I stuck around....mostly in classes and general lurking in the forums.
I found out my ex girl was active on this site.
To be honest, I really don't remember. I found the Cult years ago after googling Palahniuk back when I was a big fan and then didn't join up because at the time I just wrote fanfiction and didn't feel like doing anything serious or getting into workshopping. I think I got litreactor through Facebook after an author I listed on my likes shared a link, although I can't remember who it was. I read articles on here for months before I decided to join when Teleport Us came around.
I was a not very active member of the Cult, and checked it one day right before the site lanched.
I don't actually remember how exactly I found it, I was already introduced to Chuck by a recommendation for the book Invisible Monsters. Then when Laura linked the craft article, I decided to see what was up. Carefully avoiding any landmines. Also noticed a how to write YA fiction class. (This was before I had given up on writing YA.)
From Chuck P's Facebook posts. Came to visit the site, fell in lust and bought the T-shirt.
I was searching for something and the forum showed up as a search result.
