Post your favorite literary characters and why. They don't have to be the main characters either.
Mine would be the Continental Op from Dashiell Hammet's novels.
Mr. Rosewater from God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater. I love a character that is mellow. It thrills me.
Harry Keough from the Necroscope series.
Artemis Entreri from the Drizzt Do'Urden Novels by R.A. Salvatore. He worked his ass off to be the best and kept up despite his competition having a hundred or so years on him in training. Yeah, he was just a bad ass.
John Yossarian from Catch-22
(but lately, Rorshach from Watchmen is a close second)
I'll give you Rorshach. He was pretty bad ass.
Also, I love Lisbeth Salander from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. She's so strong. I love her.
Atticus Finch.
"Never compromise. Even in the face of Armageddon." - Rorschach (AKA Walter Kovacs)
Chauncey Wayne Sughrue. Sug as in sugar. Rue as in rue the fuckin day.
by James Crumley
Panda: Are you a bastard as well. I am.
Rorshach is a classy choice.
Jon Snow? Not Tyrion Lannister?
Raoul Duke, for me, just the way that a fictional character came to life and ate it's author, I mean, Raoul Duke destroyed Hunter.
Fine, if you bring her into it then that series has 3 characters that are totally legendary.
I apparently need to read these books.
Not gonna lie, but I like Paul from...Paul.
Woodrow F. Call
well, for me thats a no brainer hank chinaski in all bukoski novels..................pours beer into the ground
"Woodrow F. Call"
That answer. I love Lonesome Dove.
Deets would be a pretty close second. Or Pea Eye, so many great characters!
Speaking of that, is Lonesome Dove worth reading?
Definitely. The whole series.
Oh yes, yes, yes.
I think Lonesome Dove is ...splendid.
Yeah? Okay. I've recently started to enjoy the idea of western novels, and I was all excited when I found an old copy of Zane Grey's Lone Star Ranger, but I couldn't get more than about 50 pages into it because the writing was a bit...dated. And I've wondered about McMurtry's stuff, just never dedicated myself to it.
Yeah I never read any westerns and I didn't want to. LD was awesome, though.
I don't like Westerns. Lonesome Dove is in a class by itself. Read it...and then we can talk about themes....
I will. Loved the mini-series. Difficult to get actors of that caliber to commit to a project like that.
In the LD movie, Gus reminded me of my grandfather, except for the blatant sex stuff. Just his sense of humor.
I read a lot of comics when I was little, but there was a long gap between the comics I read then and when I read Watchmen and V for Vendetta. But back when I did read comics I always liked a very specific type of superhero and since the Question was an Objectivist I might as well mention that I always liked superheroes that fit a pretty specific economic mold.
Side note: Objectivist Superhero? But, superheroes help other people, don't they? Isn't it immoral to help other people?
Anyways, I always liked Batman and Iron Man, and for more or less the same reasons. If you're superman and you show up on Earth and you have superpowers well, what are you going to do? Supervillan, Superhero, doesn't matter, you're stuck in that career path one way or the other. But Superheroes who don't have superpowers, who actually chose to get into the trade, I always respected them more. Batman and Iron Man got extra points because I always believed that there was a fundamental message about social responsibility in their characters. Both of them were super-rich, society had given them a lot. And so the least they could do to return the favor was to dress up in crazy outfits and fight crime.
If we had a Tony Stark or a Bruce Wayne the world would be a better place. They would make the rest of us look so goddamn ungrateful and irresponsible that we would be guilted into submission.
Roland--dark tower.
Holden Caulfield--yeah, I said it.
Jesus.
Ringo Starr.
Scarlett O'Hara, the original Paris Hilton of the South
That Jesus character has been in a lot of books.
Yossarian
Philip Marlowe
Brer Rabbit
I fucking love Rorschach!
@ Dave - one of the most haunting scenes from the Watchmen film was the actor's scream in the prison fight. It is the most testicle-tightening scream I've ever heard, and should have won a "Best Sound Effect" special award from the Academy.
There were times when my entire defense of the Watchmen movie rested solely on Rorschach. So good.
I like when he does the inkblot tests.
Aw now I'm all hot and bothered, I'm watching the Watchmen.
You caught that huh ;)
Yeah, I "retired" from the airlines and funded a respectable home theatre. I'm rockin HD Watchmen in 5.1.
Im in the ER with an ear infection right now. Yay me.
Just 2 people ahead of me.
