I'd just go full Italian on it and call myself Lorenzo.

But at least there aren't any shameful Nicholases out there, with the possible excepton of Sparks (and I think there's a Jonas brother).

I have a friend named Lawrence but he goes by Lex. Jake would be suspect.

"I don't believe in talent. As both a writer and a painter, I've found that whatever natural aptitute a person might have is almost meaningless compared to lots of seriously hard work and a desire to improve."

"I see it on the telly. Such as Simon Cowell has a huge talent for being an utter cunt.."

"Over the years culture, age, mood, and even whether or not a person ate breakfast have been shown to have a significant effect on recorded IQ."

Great comments and responses. I had a debate with a friend about talent recently. She believes it comes naturally, but I believe it's something that happens out of circumstance, hard work and the desperate need to compensate for something missing. So maybe it does come 'naturally'.

"Fundamentals are the crutch of the talentless." - Kenny fuckin' Powers

.... I think this applies to athletics, not to writing. But I like the sound of it.

I'm not sure that applies to sports either.

"... in a nutshell, you can train all you want. You can work on your catching, your throwing, your running. Hell, it might even be enough to get you into the majors. But if you want to be a standout. An All-star, a champion, you need more than hard work and dedication. You need something that you can't work for.  You need a blessing from God. Al-mighty."

Follow the UFC?  Jon Jones hasn't been embarassing the best fighters in the world because of his dedication and fundamentals. He is a freak athlete, like Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps, LeBron James....

Are you talking about steroids?

All kidding aside, I am sure that my philosophy of talent applies to sports, but all the talent in the world still isn't dick without a lot of practice.

That sums it up for me Nkwilczy. Practice won't make you talented, and talent won't make you successful--I think one needs a heavy dose of both (or at least, a small dose of talent and a heavy dose of practice) to really "get" something and make it work for them.

I think guys who get sweaty and bend over on the open field in front of a crowd of people then chase a ball around while slamming into other dudes hard have a lot of talent.
