@Jfdiaz--I like them. The writing isn't that sophisticated. I mean if you enjoyed Harry Potter type writing you will like it. It is darker than most YA books though because of the concept.  I mean underage kids battle to the death. I enjoyed it because I read it as a young adult novel, I didn't read it expecting it to be on the same level as something written for adults. It does have some pretty deep ideas in there though as the series goes on with book two and three.  I mean this book is being read by Junior High school kids and it basically is about questioning authority and totalitarianism. I mean the freaking President is the villian of the series. He is described as smelling of blood and roses.

@Panda--I am a fan.  I didn't expect to like them at all then I listened to the first one on audiobook and it was that one scene with the bread that got me. I'm not sure if you got to it yet. I mean Katniss the main character, she is flawed, she can be a selfish bitch and cruel especially to the guy in the book who really loves her but at the same time, you understand why because of the way she grew up and the society they live in, she doesn't trust anyone. They are performing on camera even as they are fighting for their lives so there is a point where she is trying to win over the audience so she doesn't die. I'm not really spoiling anything because that's the basic concept.

@both diaz and Panda--I would say they are worth reading even if there are times when you think, okay, that part is a little cheesy because of the overall story. They are going to make cool movies if they are done right. I  mean the themes of the books are awesome to teach kids, they are about poverty, the class system and questioning authority and even that thing I mentioned in another thread about "sacrificing lives for the greater good", it makes you question who is really good or bad. What's funny is the main character is flawed, which I like, she is two faced in a way but she is also a realistic depiction of a girl, I think because she can shut off all emotion if she needs to survive but she is also very vulnerable when it comes to the people she loves.

That's what interested me the most, the plot and Katniss. I've been a HUGE Battle Royale fan for years. The manga changed my life, at one point almost made me vomit. I don't have a light stomach either. I know the series gets a lot of shit for supposedly "ripping off" BR, but I believe two (or more) people can come up with a similar idea. Another thing is that BR isn't as big here as it is in Japan. I like the fact that a subject such as that can gain popularity here.

The problem people saw with BR coming here to the states was because of school shootings. They didn't want teenagers getting ideas.

True Story:

My junior year of high school we went around discussing our favorite books. I said mine was BR. Everyone asked what it was about. I said it was about a bunch of high school kids killing each other. I recieved nothing but blank stares and my friend asked me what was wrong with me.

@aylee also, the protagonist isn't annoying, there isn't any sappy romance, and it feels more realistic.
