Smart guy talking about genre writing. I haven't read him, but this made me want to.

zomg he is so good. The Scar is one of my favorite books ever. Two words: Possible Sword. Read that shit! Perdido Street Station is fantastic, Looking for Jake as well, and Iron Council, the City and the City. Fuck it, all of his books are great.

HOWEVER:

He is a communist.

Well, there it is.

Thanks for posting.

I read The City and the City.  I felt the basic conceit was brilliantly established, but as it progressed the story itself struggled to be as interesting as the world it took place in.  Good noir voice and good setup, but I read the second half with far less enthusiasm than the first.

I don't read much SF or fantasy and thought he might be an inroad for me.  From the interview I do get the sense that his best might still be to come.  Definitely an interesting writer.

He's a Marxist, not a Communist. I loved Perdido Street Station and The Scar. Didn't care for the rest. Haven't read his last two books and put down Iron Council without giving it much of a chance.

He's a nice guy. Works in my English department.

Did a five-week seminar on weird fiction; that was great.
