I never liked anyone and I'm afraid of people - Ellis, Imperial Bedrooms
go
I will second that line from Imperial Bedrooms. Killer ending.
also,
His tongue barely touches mine and pulls away like a thief and oh Lucy if you had only asked me for this.
Will Christopher Baer - Kiss Me, Judas
The explosion was tremendous, lighting up the night like the wrath of God, and it rained fire twenty blocks away.
Richard Bachman (lol) - The Running Man
This thread has a dangerous potential. Spoilers and all that.
Loved the line from Imperial Bedrooms. One of my favorites is the ending from The Rules of Attraction by B.E.E.
"She started telling me her life story, which wasn't very interesting, and when Rockpile came on singing "Heart" I had to turn it up, drowning out her voice, but still I turned to her, my eyes interested, a serious smile, nodding, my hand squeezing her knee, and she..."
"Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter — tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther.... And one fine morning —
So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
Personally, I like the ending of my own novel, BUT...since it's not yet published and Imperial Bedrooms has already been mentioned, I'll go with this...
"Images so violent and malicious that they seemed to be my only point of reference for a long time afterwards. After I left." - Less Than Zero, Bret Easton Ellis
My favourite ending is from Arthur C. Clarke's "The Nine Billion Names of God", which is also one of my favourite short stories.
To quote it out of context would not do it justice. It's only a short story. Go and read it. Then come back and we can clink glasses.
@Dr. Gonzo
One of the most uncomfortable endings ever. I didn't know what to think, what to believe, or what to do with myself.
I just sat there.
Waiting for something.
I closed the book.
I lit another cigarette.
@ Jack. Yeah I've read that story. It is a good one.
@wickedvoodoo: Clink.
jacks_username is correct on this one, the ending of The Great Gatsby completely justified Fitzgerald's ego.
"I have two normal feet and I can't see the slightest God-damned reason why anybody should stare at them," said the young man. "Five, please." He took his room key out of his robe pocket.
He got off at the fifth floor, walked down the hall, and let himself into 507. The room smelled of new calfskin luggage and nail-lacquer remover. He glanced at the girl lying asleep on one of the twin beds. Then he went over to one of the pieces of luggage, opened it, and from under a pile of shorts and undershirts he took out an Ortgies calibre 7.65 automatic. He released the magazine, looked at it, then reinserted it. He cocked the piece.
Then he went over and sat down on the unoccupied twin bed, looked at the girl, aimed the pistol, and fired a bullet through his right temple." - A Perfect Day for Bananafish, J.D Salinger
Gold star for those who can guess this.
Do you get an Achievement?

It's all a joke.
I wasn't sure if this was actual book endings or line endings or story endings. I love the ending of fight club with them staring at the buildings falling. Its strangely beautiful. I like the ending of donnie darko.
The Ending in Donnie Darko doesn't hold a candle to the raw emo-ness of the end of Sunshine.
The kid at the end of Sunshine hurls himself into the sun (because, like, he is supposed to, its like his job) and then emails the entire world a note that says "You'll miss me when I'm gone." (Like I said, it was his job, I can't think anyone expected him to come back)
The Pathos!
The end of The Contortionist's Handbook was great, mainly because it pissed me off so much.
For me, believe it or not, an ending to a Stephen King novel! Pet Semetary - one word: "Darling."
But as far as denouement I love two Jim Thompson endings: the end of Savage Night and the prayer of Lou Ford at the end of The Killer Inside Me...

Spot-on, for movie endings...
