Just attended a Writers Unite meeting. I'm glad I went, but please writers if you are going to get up and speak into a microphone, please learn how to do it so you don't sound like you are wearing a muzzle. Out of nine writers reading, only three really understood how to use a mic. If the words cannot be heard, what is the point.....If you are going to do readings, master the mic. The six that didn't just sounded like a bunch of hicks mumbling through a handkerchief......sigh.  Master the tech or the art is lost.

Where is it being held? It's usually way to far to make it w/o a pretty good plan. Also Jose, if you don't mind. Would you tell me what the acronym means and what is the guts of the gig, so to speak. Thanks. gsr

AWP: Association of Writers & Writing Programs

It's a free for all where writers of all walks of life converge and talk about the current state of writing. That is methodology, pedagogy, history, future, other ideas, and the such.

It will be held in DC this year.

I've thought about checking out an AWP conference. I could actually get to DC, but it hasn't been on my radar and I didn't realize the thing was so soon. A saturday pass is $45. Would there be enough swag left by Saturday to make it worth the trip? Estimated chances I'll find out: 1-in-15

smithreynolds's picture

@Christopher M Rigby. I hate to tell you this but "disappointingly quiet" is the general status quo on this site. It's up to you to liven it up, if you please.Let me know how you do. I ran into some really cool people here. I worked my ass off to connect, and it never really happened. I made a fool of myself a thousand times over, and stomped and raved and tried to find my way in. There is no "in". So have fun and write and submit to the workshop and read the craft essays and the articles and give some feedback and energy to the community. See what happens. Anything that you get out of it will be generated by guess who...you. And,  be nice. The people who run this place just lost a dear friend. We did not know him, because that was never allowed, but they are grieving, so be gentle.

Jose F. Diaz's picture

The site ebbs and flows depending on who is here. I've been on this site from nearly the beginning. A lot of those writers who were initially here have actually gone on to keep writing and find ways to make it a career. I, myself, have finished my undergrad and am now in an MFA for creative writing.

You can be the change, begin the next session of writers who find the site and prosper, or you can wait... Your call. Post, get others involved, take advantage of the classes, share your knowledge, read the craft essays, ACTUALLY WRITE, and you'll get what you put in.

Good luck.

Jose is spot on. I'm pretty impressed with the success people who got their start here have had. Getting work into lit mags, publishing books, editing for journals...
