Hi all, I have recently created http://wordly.info and I would like to share it with the writer's community. The idea is simple - enter one or more words and get a list of related words/topics. It is good for brainstorming or finding words to refine your sentences.
I am not a writer myself, so I would love to hear your feedback on it!

Hmm, looks like a thesaurus only not as strict. Could be useful in those moments you're like, shit, what's the word I'm looking for...

It is something like that if you use it for one word. It does get more interesting if you put in more than one, for example "cinema car" would give you "trailer" among other words.

I just used it for something. It didn't quite work this time. But neither did thesuarus, like, at all. So I went back to it, and took some words lower down in the list and put those into regular thesaurus... and eventually found something.

Woo hoo!

Nice! Do you think if the words returned by Wordly linked to a thesaurus that would be helpful?

Hmm, if I could click on each word and it took me to thesuaus.com for said word, I'd use that feature.

Links to thesaurus now implemented in the site, thanks a lot for your feedback!

Interesting, I put in 'intense shudder' it didn't exactly give me the word I was looking for but there were quite a few good options. I also like the thesaurus feature. I've got it bookmarked and will try again next time. It's an awesome idea thank you for sharing!

I am very glad for your positive feedback! If you find it useful please consider sharing it using the newly placed social buttons on the site (or a small donation if you feel like it, it will help with the running costs of the site and help me keep it ad-free). It will mean a lot!

I just used your site again.

Wanted to replace the word "unison" so I put it in. Ehhhh, nothing. So I tried "conjunction" because that seemed close enough. Not far down the list was "coordination." Aha! Perfect.

Didn't even use the thesaurus link this time. Made the change.

I'm liking this...

Sorry, no words match your query, please try with a different one.

Yes, sometimes it will not be able to get results for your query, for example if you have a spelling mistake, entered words that are not contained in the tool's dictionary (though it is pretty large, it is over 70 000 words), or you have entered some completely unrelated words and there was no match for all of them, like "bagel" and "cosmos".

Do you think it will be better to include a more thorough explanation on the website, similar to this one?

That might be good to add as an explanation.

Can you add more words? If we tried something and didn't come up with results and let you know what words or word combo we used would that be helpful to you to build on what you already have?

I have no idea how these algorithm things work or how to create a website or build on one so it's an honest question on my part.

Those are good ideas, I could look into that.

ohhh, word combos would be cool. sounds exponentially more difficult, but i could be wrong about that.

Philip Uzunov's picture

Thuggish, you currently CAN enter more than one word separated by spaces and it will try to return words that match all of your words at once, if this is what you mean by combo.

!!!

so, does this venn diagram it or just do both words or what?

@Phillip --- yeah, i entered words like "noumenal" and "alterity" and came up with nothing. if its dictionary's that limited, i'd refer all to The Synonym Finder by J.I. Rodale, a book that every writer should have on his desk.

@Thuggish - it returns words that relate at least a bit to all of the words you enter, perhaps I need to make this more clear on the site itself. It can do more than 2 as well, give it a try!

@ubik 77 - that is a very valid concern, I will see how much I can expand the dictionary without making the queries unacceptably slow.

@Philip --- i should probably point out that words like "noumenal" are technical words (Kantian philosophy, for example) and therefore it's not surprising that it doesn't work for those. but a lot of technical terms from various fields could use a generator such as this. good luck with it, mate.

Hey all, just wanted to let you know that I added a random name generator tool to my website here. You can choose a length and how many names you want to be generated and they come with a handy link to copy them directly to your clipboard. Nothing revolutionary, but I hope you may find it useful.

I love name generators! I tend to use them when I'm writing fantasy works. It's a great addition I'll have to check it out.

Just wanted to share that I have made some tweaks and it should work better if you enter multiple words - previously you would sometimes get words that are strongly related to one word but not the others at the top of the list, now this is not the case.
