For a while now, I've been trying to find a community of writers to share and read aloud their work in a social setting. Is anyone interested in a physical meet up, say once every two weeks around the Tri-State area?
I can't participate being in the Midwest and all, but I encourage people to do this who are serious about their careers as authors. Learning how to read aloud in front of an audience is one of those things you should learn how to do as soon as possible. Best to get the mistakes and nervousness out of your system while you can.
There is a great Writers Group in Indianapolis, but it's about an hour from where I am. I still go once a month because the writers are a kick-ass bunch of pros. I just started a writers workshop here in Lafayette. There's more interest than I thought there might be, but it will be slow going. A lot of people around here are just... complacent. Yeah, I think that's the word I want. I read my stuff aloud at home to get a feel for flow and all, but the first time I read in front of *Writers* - wow... I could get drunk on the dynamic flow of the group.
GET A GROUP GOING! ..even if it's just you and one other person. The passion will be contagious and it'll grow.
What is this great writers group in Indianapolis you speak of, SappleScoot?
It's the Indy Writers Group, steered by Kate Chaplin. They meet on the 2nd and 4th Mondays at Panera near Castleton, 7:30 PM til....? (Usually 9:30/10:00 or so)

i'd like to find a barfly kind of writing group in portland, which i didnt think would be so hard. you know eight or so people who meet every week or two at a pub, and sit around the thick slabs of timber that might be called a table, and drink and talk and read aloud when the occasion calls.
@iBronco: I am definitely interested and also in the area. Also been meaning to check the established readings around town; KGB, Pete's Candy Store, or maybe even the Bowery Poetry Club. Though the drunk in me is really keen on the informal sitting at a table and drinking until the occasion calls idea that Charles has.
Anyone in South Texas?..................... (crickets)..........
