This is a topic on football, not soccer. First of all: excuse me for my bad English. Ok, let's go on.
This is a post on the greatest game in the world. A story yet to be written. But 'we' are on the right track. haha
Netherlands-Spain 5-1... Did anyone see this match? 4years ago, we dutchies, lost from Spain in a rather dirty match the worldcupfinals.Yesterday, revenge was sweet. This is going to be a great Tournament, may the best team win!
Amazing header!
United States has to play against Ghana in there first match... What is it going to be? Hmmm i see 'you' are also in a group with Germany and Portugal... (If you knew what that meant you would shit in your pants right now) Germany and Portugal, damn, you can really use all the help you can get. Seriously... Therefore i will answer all sorts of questions on it, if you would have any.
To crack up things a bit on the matter, here is a nice video on soccer , eeeuh football...
Kick in at 16:04
Good luck, you yanks... :-)
Greets!
The US should get extra points for all the plane travel they will be doing to get to the field venues during this Tournament--more than any other team. They are a fine team!
Only game I've seen was the SUI vs ECU. Me no have ESPN.
I like watching Netherlands play. I was hoping they'd win over the Spanish team last world cup. The US team surprised me with their win over Ghana. I'm hoping they beat Portugal this Sunday and advance with Germany. It's a surprise about Spain, England, and maybe Italy being out in the first round.
I wouldn't say England was a surprise. As soon as the groups were announced there was widespread pessimism. The big surprise has been the abject performances of Spain. It's nice to see teams like Costa Rica doing well. They were in a group with three previous World Cup champions, and have a very good chance of beating all three.
I had expected the USA to get out of their group. Germany were always going to be top, but Portugal are a one man team (and that one man is a cretin), and Ghana have been looking beatable. A potential tie against Belgium looks good to me, though it'll be a tough match.
I don't get why people are always going on about "previous winners" - Uruguay won in 1930 and 1950, and England was in, what, 1966...?
So, having awesome soccer players 50 years ago should indicate anything about the country's current players...? - don't think so...
I mentioned it because few teams have beaten two former champions in a world cup. I don't think any teams have beaten three. Regardless though, if you had a bet down for Costa Rica to triumph over both Uruguay and Italy (both very good teams, despite the time since Uruguay's last win), you'd be getting a nice amount of cash back.
What went wrong? Lack of world class players. Look at the squad - Rooney is over-rated, and has never performed well in an international tournament. Gerrard, much as I love him, isn't as good as he used to be. He covered more distance than any other player against Uruguay, just like he used to do with Liverpool, because he just doesn't have faith in those around him. His dropping deeper to help the defence is what led to the second goal. Jagielka was coming back from injury and you could see he wasn't fully fit, but we have no depth in defence to replace him. We have some great youth coming through - Sterling & Barkley in particular excite me, but they need a lot more games under their belt before they can leap from potential to world class.
The weird thing is that England have performed better at this tournament than in any since 1996, especially against Italy. Uruguay has just 2 shots on target all match - Suarez made all the difference.
Despite England (or maybe because) crashing out early, this is my favourite World Cup since 1990. There is a feeling that almost anything can happen. Netherlands set the tone with that victory over Spain, but there have been a lot of odd and unexpected results. I'm still expecting one of Brazil or Argentina to win it, but there could be a winner from leftfield. There could be an equivalent of Denmark's win in the European Championship in 92, or Greece in 04.
Of course we were scared of suarez, no one wants to get eaten alive.
Cool to see Algeria go through. I happened to be watching during their 3-goals-in-12' against Korea. Some good handling and energy.
I'm bummed USA lost. They have played well though I think. I hope the enthusiasm for soccer stays high now.
Tim Howard for President!! Yay Team USA!!!
Robben....dive dive dive....should have been a submarine captain
@Species84: Yes, I was born and raised in Birmingham, AL. Soccer here hasn't been as big as it is in Europe, but this year everyone was pumped about the WC14. Every bar, club, restaurant w/a TV was tuned in, and people painted their faces and really followed the action. Americans are great fans of almost any sport (curling not so much down South :), and there really has been a lot of enthusiasm. We do have a lot people from many different countries here, due to our medical center. I think people would be surprised what my city and suburbs are now; they usually keep the old stereotypes from past about Birmingham and the South in general. I usually don't talk very much in other cities or countries, as my Southern accent is pretty noticeable and people make negative comments many times: yes, we wear shoes! yes, we have indoor plumbing! yes, I can read and write! It's really weird the generalizations people make about my area of the US.
I was shocked that Brazil lost so badly to Germany; not sure who I'm pulling for in the game for the team to play Germany, but I hope it's a good game!
Cheers!
@Species84: Congrats on your victory tonight!
Thanks for playing, Species84---- Slainte - as my Irish grandmother would say!
