Helloooo everyone!
I'm a newbie, but intrigued fan of stories about the future: Dystopian, Post-apocalyptic and outbreak stories mostly. I wanted to know if anyone had any Post-Apocalyptic books/short stories they'd recommend for me to read.
So far I've only read:
The Road
World War Z
Day by Day Armageddon.
That's all I could remember off the top of my head. Looking forward to your recommendations!
you should read farenheit 451. i would consider that dystopian.
A Clock Work Orange.
Who Fears Death by Nnedi Okorafor
The Man in the High Castle by Philip K. Dick
The Stand by Stephen King
Rant by Chuck Palahniuk
I Am Legend by Richard Matheson
The Book of Revelation.
Some Other Day or Midnight Yore
Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
1984 by George Orwell
Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
Deus Irae and The Penultimate Truth by Philip K Dick, as well as many of his short stories.
The Electric Church by Jeff Sommers (Very entertaining!)
And I agree with Alex about Chuck Palahniuk's Rant. It's probably my favorite dystopian novel mainly because of the way the dystopia is introduced.
Y: The Last Man for a great graphic novel series of a dystopian future.
On the topic of graphic novels- The Walking Dead.
Wastelands: Stories of the Apocalypse Ed. by John Joesph Adams
Achillez wins. I was gonna throw that one in, and then saw he'd already posted it. One of the best anthologies I've ever read. Most of my favorite writers are represented: Stephen King, Tobias S. Buckell, Paolo Bacigalupi. Then there are other greats, like Ursula K. Le Guin, George R. R. Martin, and Orson Scott Card, etc.
And as a bonus, Adams even gives you a recommended further reading list at the end, which includes both novels and short fiction. Just brilliant.
I strongly rocommend:
We by Yevgeny Zamyatin
Alas Babylon by Pat Frank
I always think that post-apocolyptic stories can take place in an isolated geography while the rest of the world enjoys business as usual. I am currently reading Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy. I truly feel that his depictions of violence, destruction, entropy in all regards is very post-apocolpyptic.
@Achillez
My brother gave that book and I can't wait to read it.
DMZ by Brian Wood. Very realistic look at life in war-torn NYC from a reporter's POV. Absolutely fantastic read.
I really enjoyed Swan Song from Robert McCammon. I've been meaning to read The Road since it came out and haven't gotten to it yet.
Chuck's Obsolete from Haunted
China Mieville's the City and the City is somewhat dystopian.
