On a more serious note, (as opposed to the goofy videos I've been sharing) this (and pretty much anything featuring Mary Elizabeth Mcglynn) is part of my horror playlist.

The song, and many of the songs on any soundtrack Mary participates in, goes well with any creepy horror atmosphere. I encourage you guys to take a listen.

Here's one more featuring the same vocalist. It's got more rock to it.

Larson was a godamn genius, I love Rent. I think my favorite songs are the Mimi & Roger duets (light my candle) and anything with Idina Menzel. Have you heard Spring Awakening? I thought it was very Larson-esque.

I'm on a pop music kick nowadays, and if you haven't heard Karmin yet, you will this summer. These guys will be big. I'm really excited for a their full-length album, but for now they just have an EP. I don't know-- are they famous? Maybe they are, I'm old so I don't know what the hep cats are listening to these days.

Here's the title track live and acoustic--not so many lite-pop groups can pull this off so well:

Yes, any Broadway freak would know about. Plus, any normal person may know about it too. I'm in the Broadway freak category. I haven't really found a place in my heart for Spring Awakening, unfortunately.

@Jeffrey; THE HOOK! YES! At time's I am surprised how a man responsible for some of the most legendary and well-recognized basslines of all time can slip through the cracks of so many people's musical conciousness, but still you never see enough Jamerson love when the bass is brought up.

Here's another one for all lovers of music that will destroy your sub-woofer:

@Mike Adam: wow that is some funky stuff right there! I'd heard the name before, but never really gave it a solid listen. He brings that funk. It's pretty rare to hear such a funky bass man playing an Alembic--very fat sound he's got though.

^Stanley Clarke did the soundtrack to Boyz in the Hood, I think, and is someone you'd see all over jazz and R&B records if you were ever an avid sampler/rap producer.

Mike Adam's picture

@Jeffrey: I remember someone telling me once that Stanley Clarke actually had a signature Alembic, and if it's tone is anything like the stuff you hear in his songs it's probably amazing

@Renfield: I knew he was popular in hip-hop sampling, I had no idea that he scored Boyz-N-The-Hood though! Slight music geek out moment happening right now.

Pepper Adams reaches another level on this one

@voodem: yes. Thank you for that.

And yes. Colin Meloy writes, people. So does Willy Vlautin. And Todd Snider.

This thread says:

Post a gem. So far it is full of fluff, but that is my opinion. When I hear "post a gem," to me that means something new and obscure. Not all the same old stuff. Well, a lot of that is amazing. But we already know it. So...give us a gem please. A NEW gem.

BTW Matt's Type O Negative post is what I am talking about.

Fucking loosen up. Look for gems and post em.

See how pissed I am?

Just kidding. But please, for the sake of the art, get more creative.

I see "gem" I think old and obscure, songs that aren't forgotten because nobody listened to them in the first place. But people don't listen to that kind of music.

More obscure than Bikini Kill, some pre-Sleater-Kinney action here

She's a terrible singer.

Random video, not sure if I've posted this on here before. Anyway, I love it.
