So you're stuck on that desert island, lots of sand, a palm tree, a drinking fountain for fresh water, an endless supply of insects and coconuts, and crabs (either kind, whichever fits your story best).

Oh, and a mailbox (handy red flag optional). And an internet connection that leads to ONE SITE ONLY.

We're all dying to know: Whether old-fashioned print or digitally distributed, free for all or prohibitively expensive, what's the one literary journal you can't live without?

A bit indecisive? You're allowed a second pick, but only if one of your choices is gratis, a freebie. Making money on the island is hard.

CAVEATS: There will be no whoring of any kind or you will be voted off the island. There is a thread for that. And, citing publications where YOU are published (or are employed) is grounds for immediate expulsion (er, drowning). The idea is to identify publications YOU love and YOU aspire to, not those you've already graced with your genius talent.

Tell us what you oh-so-brilliant writers consider worthy (epic) reading.

Waiting for a reply? Seems, uhm, like you are short on reading material.

Good news is that there are years of archives.

I think the experience of the desert island would ween me off of reading altogether.

Michael.Eric.Snyder's picture
Michael.Eric.Snyder March 12, 2013 - 11:36pm

Yes, I must be. And I'm waiting for white or black smoke and I'm not Catholic.

Your desert island publication was considered for rejection on the grounds of too many colors but thankfully, passed on the grounds that text is included. Plus, all the pretty colors will provide a necessary desert-island-beige relief.

J.Y.

You must contribute or be voted off the island for lack of an appropriate opinion. Yes, I'm making rules up as I go.  And you have a drinking fountain if you get thirsty and that means you can enjoy reading beneath the shade of a palm frond or two. This is an idyllic setting don't you agree?

jyh's picture

Hey, just sayin'.

But, just so no one will come and put the clamps on your thread due to my obstinacy, I'll pick—I don't know—whatever magazine has the biggest issues. No, Foreign Policy magazine. That's the one I'd want. Or The Economist. A subscription along with full access to the online archives.

Michael.Eric.Snyder's picture
Michael.Eric.Snyder March 12, 2013 - 11:51pm

I have never heard of Foreign Policy magazine. But then I'm not a foreign policy-maker. The Economist sounds boring (what were you a business major?) but then this is your fantasy and it's not for me to judge (unduly).

And do they even have stories?

A choice in this drug-addled vein for me would be The New Yorker or National Geographic (for porn).

jyh's picture
jyh from VA is reading whatever he feels like March 13, 2013 - 12:02am

NG is good; you can look at pictures of islands and stuff. And tNY is a good catch-all: some creative, some non-fiction, some creative non-fiction, some cartoons, some "cartoons."

My picks are fact-filled, filled to the brim with facts. I won't want to trifle with fiction; I'll want to know what's happening in the world, which might make me feel better about being deserted. A story about spaceships might make me want to leave the island.

Michael.Eric.Snyder's picture
Michael.Eric.Snyder March 13, 2013 - 12:10am

You can capitalize the t in The New Yorker it's ok although who would give a shit on a desert island.

There are all kinds of cartoons in The New Yorker but there are no "cartoons" because every story in it is brilliant especially the liberal ones's.

No I don't really think that that was a joke. It is a magazine for the bed-wetting liberals and that's ok if you think that because you are probably right or I could be misreading you. But either way, right and write are homonyms.

jyh's picture

EDIT --- comments are sticking, and it finally got me

jyh's picture
jyh from VA is reading whatever he feels like March 13, 2013 - 12:21am

I wasn't abbreviating "The New Yorker" but rather "the New Yorker," which might be incorrect in its own way.

I don't think of it as being for bed-wetting liberals. I don't really think of it as being particularly liberal. (I hate the way the word "liberal" is used.) In my mind, the NY is not in any large way an advocate's rag.

Michael.Eric.Snyder's picture
Michael.Eric.Snyder March 13, 2013 - 12:30am

Yes it is incorrect I think but I could be wrong but that is okay because I often type you're when I mean your and who's when I mean whose even though I know the difference and am a poor proofreader. Not really. About the poor prooffreading.

I think  The New Yorker is liberal but that's just me and this thread is for soliciting opinions from those more better read than I am so you are probably right and older and please don't tell me but I don't mean any offense are you older? No don't answer that.

jyh's picture
jyh from VA is reading whatever he feels like March 13, 2013 - 12:36am

I don't read whole issues of it, so I'm no authority. It might be generally liberal. You should go to a dentist and read a year's worth of issues. Just act like you're waiting for someone.

I seem to have a problem with comprehension today with this website. I can't freakin follow what you guys are yapping about.

Anyway, if I understand the orginal post correctly, If I were doing a desert island magazine in print it would probably be The Paris Review, because even when it's not that great it's still pretty great. Online and free I'd probably go with The Collagist, including their cool blogs, not because it's consistently the best one I can think of, but it's a good heads up into some enjoyable writing that's also pertinent to my experimental interests.

Let me get this straight, these are journals/publications that we are trying to get into while we are on the island, or journals/publications we can't live without reading while on the island?

Michael.Eric.Snyder's picture
Michael.Eric.Snyder March 13, 2013 - 12:49am

@J.Y. I don't like the dentist he's scary behind the mask and uses needles and I'm never numb enough I do have good teeth though I don't collect the scummy stuff so when I get a cleaning the bib stays clean too but I bet they throw it away anyway at least I hope they do.

@RNFLD So you like Kendrick he's okay I like Ocean better but they are both good or at least in my humble opinion. Yes we are rambling but it's late and we're punchy at least I am. I think The Paris Review is great or at least I think I will think it is great coincidentally I just got my first copy in the mail but haven't read it yet and also coincidentally I get the digital editions and have got my second (I get five of those) and I haven't read that either.

My new inerest in journals is what got me to think of this great thread. The Collagist hmm I think I may have heard of or been one don't know for sure will check it out although I'm not experimental except behaviorally.

@Mr. R. Okay. Well, I think the logical choice in this situation, for both reading and/or publications, would be Kindle. While it may not be a traditional publication, I would have the most access to books and magazines. Hell, I'm sure I could find a book on how to make a boat out of palm trees and fronds and get myself off the island. Anyone can publish their stories on Kindle, so I could write, publish and as a fan base begins to grow I can slowly raise the price of my work, thus ensuring that my PayPal account has money in it for when I do see that Carribean Cruise Liner floating past. So yeah, my vote is for Kindle.

Michael.Eric.Snyder's picture
Michael.Eric.Snyder March 13, 2013 - 1:03am

R. Moon you have seen the box and stepped away from it. You are outisde the box although I do not know if you can call the Kindle a publication or media platform whatever that may be.

You are cheating too because there is no way off the island unless you are voted off and then you drown but that's ok because this is really all just imagination and not real. You are brilliant R. Moon for seeing the box for what it is and stepping outside even if it means getting voted off and you know what that means.

R.Moon's picture

I'm not going to argue getting voted off the island, but I will argue the fact that anyone can publish on Kindle.

Michael.Eric.Snyder's picture
Michael.Eric.Snyder March 13, 2013 - 1:13am

R. Moon it is your box to have be empty with you outside it. You have made a wrinkle which could affect my thread because everyone could say Kindle and that would be boring and that is shameful but there is nothing I can do about it I won't argue with you because well just because and besides.

Besides what you might ask? I don't know just besides.

Okay. So, instead of feeding me to the fish, you could at least let me go by way of Carribean. I mean, doesn't my brilliance deserve that much? lol

Michael.Eric.Snyder's picture
Michael.Eric.Snyder March 13, 2013 - 1:27am

@RNFLD Immuni-what? This desert island is disease free except for well you know it's in the first post and in that case it might cleanse you of your fornicatory explorations prior to your desert island arrival so I will allow the cleansing idol but if you think this means you can't get voted off well that would be a stretch cuz this thread is my idea but that's ok I'll think it...ok you can have it. and I meant Frank Ocean but Billy O is cool too I could have been more specific he was on the Grammys.

No fornicatory probably isn't a word but this is my thread not yours and I have poetic license and I can also make up words when I want to.

@R. Moon I am not sure maybe Carnivale unless I am feeling generous I bet stories will be written about Carnivale. But yeah you are brilliant and hurt my eyes that is what I meant not brilliant like smart you knew that right?

R.Moon's picture

Call it what you want, but I threw a monkey wrench in your whole idea on the first page of this thread. Any smart person would choose Kindle. You'd never run out of things to read and you can still publish.

Michael.Eric.Snyder's picture
Michael.Eric.Snyder March 13, 2013 - 1:38am

I know I know you are salt and rubbing it in like salt does but there will be no salt on the island but you you are one giant spice and that might make you ocean kin you might not drown that makes me think you might not. The sea or the ocean might see your salt and call you kin and you might not drown what a wrench it wrenches my heart for this thread into pieces you are a smart spoiler but know I think with your Kindle you might so sad but you might set fire to the Palm tree and its fronds and then where would you be but lobster red? That would smart haha.

OK off to sleep I might get 6 hours of it.

Unfortunately, much like playground freeze tag, the rules were made up as the game went on. I've been cast off for choosing the logical choice. And, much like things in the real world, looking at things logically hasn't helped me here. But, thanks, nonetheless. Suck it, Jeff Probst!
